I picked this CS Trail Master (Taiwan made) up today.

I know they have been around for a good while but I've never seen one with a wood handle outside of a custom job. Looks to be cherry. Sort of plain looking but I like it.

I asked the guy I got it from and he said it was that way when he got it but that he got it used.

Did any of TMs come from the factory with a wood handle?

Yes.

It is the Laredo Bowie Trailmaster.

I don't think that is what it is though.

See the difference in the guard/handle.

I noticed the difference in the collar.

I'm betting yours is early production, with the latter versions adding the collar to protect the end of the wood from chipping.

I saw a few with the brass pin and same shaped handle, but they all had the collar.

I bet that was originally a Trailmaster with the kraton handle that someone replaced at some point. Coldsteel has a forum over on Bladeforums, I bet they'd be glad to give you some more information.

Could also be an illegal copy.  There's lots of that going on.  Why not just contact Cold Steel and ask them directly?

Those are cable tang knives, nowhere near as strong as a full tang knife. You are at the mercy of the strength of the welded cable attachment.

What steel?

Carbon 5

SK-5

O-1

or

San Mai?

No.
It is a rehandled Trailmaster.

There's a lot of bad info in this thread.

Cable tang? Really?

Ok, my mistake. The cable tang is on the "more expensive" Natchez Bowie. Typical CS...more cost, crappier construction.

I asked over on Blade Forums (they helped me out a lot when I found a "sterile" Mad Dog ATAK) and they agreed that the handle was replaced and did not come from the factory that way.

Meh, I suspect someone just wanted a nice oil-finished wood handle sorta in the shape of the Laredo instead of the rubber one.

I like it anyway, OP....and much better than the original Kraton handle it came with.

I gotta tell ya'll though...I think that antler handled version is pure sex. Where do I get one like that?

I had to do a search for cable tang. I've been a knifemaker for 25 yrs and an enthusiast of all edged weapons and tools for 40 years and never heard of one.

I apologize for thinking you were making up some shit when you said "cable tang".
