I'm trying to decided what to get one of my groomsmen for a gift. He is my brother in law of 2 years and just recently graduated from law school so im looking for something nice for a EDC with a suit. I'm thinking the Benchmade 470 Emissary but i had also considered giving him one of the Benchmade pens. Any suggestions of other knives or opinions on either of those two?

I love the Axis lock but am not very fond of the Axis assist. I played with a mini barrage and was not impressed at all. Typical Bechmade quality but I didn't like having the assist. I have a 710 McHenry & Williams as my EDC and a 940 Osbourne as my dress EDC. I have had both knives for 12+ years and have never had a bit of problems with either one. I have been lusting the 943 Osbourne for a little while now also. I am drawn to the sleek, clean lines of the blade.

Pretty much any Benchmade would be a good choice - just depends what he likes. They have plenty of great EDC knives in various sizes and running the full spectrum from "gentleman's knife" to "tactical".

Another option would be a custom Griptillian with some meaningful engraving. Perhaps a set of aftermarket scales if you want it to look/feel a little nicer than the factory plastic-y scales.

If you want to get a good tacticool knive, grab a Zero Tolerance. The are tough and very reasonable in price. Other USA Kershaw knifes are good too. Good stuff, yet inexpensive enough to collect like "hot wheels".

If you want a classy gentleman's knife, I would go with a William Henry custom. They are gorgeous. IF you want something special, that is the way to go.

I'm unfamiliar with most of the Benchmade line, but the Kershaw would be a nice option as well. The Leek would be a great suit carry knife. Light and slim. Has a great clip as well and is plenty strong enough of a knife for office carry. There are literally 80 versions, finishes, blade steel, and handle material. This one would be a cool one for a gift. With the cost of the Leek, you could also pick him up a light as well (vs the Benchmade). Like maybe a Preon 2. They go great in office desk drawers and with the black or silver finish, they look great in a desk. Just thought I'd through it out as an option.

Any knife will be a great gift. My brother gave a $14 Gerber from Walmart (he was a broke college kid at the time). All the groomsmen thought it was cool. The five of us still have the keychain knife from his wedding. It is a cheap knife (STL-2.0), but it handy when in your keys and reminds us if a great time.

The only knife that can go with a suit(and maybe get a pass) is a gentleman's knife. Take a look at some of the Boker Gentleman's knives, Case bone/stag knives(peanut, canoe, swayback jack are my suggestions), Schatt & Morgan, Queen, Great Eastern Cutlery and some AG Russell Knives. Heck even a swiss army knife would work. Some of the nicer Spyderco Crickets/Kopas, Al Mar Eagles, and Mcustas could work, but are somewhat of a cross between a gentleman's and a more modern knife. Getting him the emissary would be a bad choice IMO.

I got my guys Benchmades. They love em and still carry them 2+ years later.

Dont get them a Benchmade pen. I had bad experience with them. For about the same money for a tactical pen go for a $60 Hinderer

For my wedding last month I gave my groomsman these:

Lone Wolf Swale...liked them so much I got one for myself.

Oh...and I bought one of Smithy's knives for my best man, the Alpha:

For my wedding I gave the groomsmen 6D maglites. Ya.

I would say look at a cold steel ti-lite...there is just something distinguished and proper looking about its slim lines..one of my favorite cheap working knives.

Thanks for all the ideas. I am still trying to decided but i have till Oct 20 so keep em coming. I have been looking now at the Spydercos with the stainless handle like the endura 4. I think the harpy would be cool to give him but it might scare some people when he takes it out.

Just get something of quality. I have been in a few weddings and the groomsmen always get shitty gifts of shitty quality.

I've had to pay for all my goddamn tux's and anything I wear as a groomsman. It's complete bullshit. I hate being in weddings.

My brother's wedding was a $185 tux rental, my buddy's was a $160 rental. Luckily in this next one, we are just wearing white button ups with a leather vest we had to buy ($50), blue jeans, boots, brown belts. I've spent about $80 on clothes for this wedding, and I'm stoked haha. At least it's not a rental.

Is it normal for groomsmen to pay for their attire?
