Well, I got around to trying a finish on two uncoated carbon blades I had gotten last year.  Did not come out as well as I'd have liked, but they're done.  They looked really rough until I used some very fine steel wool and CLP, and spent some time polishing.  That evened the finish out and improved the look significantly.  The 3 was my first attempt, then the 4.  The 4 came out a bit better IMHO.

Main observation - even though I cleaned the steel with denatured alcohol multiple times, when the blueing started to take, it was obvious there was still something on the steel.  (Yes, I used gloves, and even changed for a new pair after the initial cleaning.)  If I try blueing again, I'll use a stronger cleaner for the first cleaning, then finish with alcohol.  I may try the vinegar patina if I do another one.

Clearer view of the blade finish.  You can see how much worse the 3 (first attempt) turned out.

Anybody make aftermarket scales for them that have a little more choil up front?

Love my 4 but sometimes I feel like my hand is gonna slip down the blade when I use it in ways no one should use a knife.

Try MEK to get the base metal chemically clean before finishing.

Isn't MEK strong enough to strip the markings?  Not sure if I'll be doing any more, but I did want to keep the markings and SN on the blade.

Probably. I stripped my Esee 3HM with paint stripper, finish cleaned with MEK, and applied cold blue. The markings are now pretty subdued.

Here's a close up. Markings are visible, but the angle of light has to be right to see them clearly.

How is the blueing holding up with use on yours?

Haven't really used it much yet. I'm not expecting much durability but it should be easy to touch up.

I blued a Rat-3.  It was a nice balance between less rusty and liking the smooth steel surface.  It did wear a lot faster than the painted coating, but if you are like me and like using a knife with bare steel rather than a coated blade.......it's a nice middle ground.

I wouldn't want it on a knife I didn't use enough to keep tabs on corrosion though.  I still have that Rat-3, but I don't use it that often any more.  Corrosion is starting to become an annoying issue from just sitting in my nightstand.

Suorised she didn't keep it for herself. I bought her an Izula years ago, one year after I had gotten mine.  Serial numbers were one number apart.  After that one, she got a venom green Izula and I bought her a Candiru.
She's got quite a few knives now.

Anyone try the scales from TKC? I can't decide which scales I want for my ESEE 4, the extended or the compact. I like that swell on the compact and I think the stock scales are too flat. The extended seems to have something of a swell as well though.

I have medium sized hands, but medium gloves are a bit tight and large gloves are a little loose. I usually end up buying large gloves.

ETA: are there any other companies making handles for the ESEE 4? Something cheaper like $15-20. $50 is outrageous for what you're getting and I hate to spend money foolishly.

I have a set of TKC's on a laserstrike. I tried a few others first, but finally gave in. Huge difference. The storage for firecord and a AH-1 arrowhead inside the scales is a bonus as well. Not sure about -4's specifically, but another plug for TKC.

I wear a 9 in sized gloves, I have the extended TKC scales on a 4.  For me, the stock scales are too thin and slightly too short.  Good feel on the TKCs, for my hands.  This is definitely a YMMV.  (Haven't tried the compact scales, haven't looked for other scales for the ESEEs.)

Hey just a quick question I'm getting rust on my Blade is this normal?  Maybe!  What knife?  What steel?  If your knife is 1095 steel - yes, rust is normal if you expose the knife to conditions likely to produce rust.  You can avoid rust by cleaning and oiling the knife after use or you could petina the knife with acidic foods (and/or other methods).  You can also use Birchwood Casey super blue to create petina (cold blueing) (LINK)

Do I need to do something to this knife?  Maybe!  Depends on what you want to accomplish...

Anyone ever been so excited to open up your new Esee knife only to find a damn Mora in the box? Yeah... happened to me today. I've heard of this scam on Amazon but never been a victim of it until today.

Needless to say the $100 Mora is on its way back and hopefully an actual RB3 will be here Saturday.

Any oil will work but if you plan to eat anything that you have cut with the knife, you might want to use vegetable oil (corn, olive, etc.).  Food grade mineral oil is OK as well...  You only need to lightly oil the exposed metal.  The parts of the knife with an intact coating are pretty impervious to the elements.

I appreciate the advice! My reason I didn't was IIRC bladeforums?

Somewhere esee dealt with too many stripped screws and broken bits, and they called out people to stop breaking their crap by over tightening or fixing what isn't broke. I have been trying to not screw with things lately, and i felt id listen to their advice and leave it assembled but I will try to get some color in it!
View Quote
To keep screws from backing out, try putting a drop (just a drop) of boiled linseed oil on the threads before installing them. The oil dries tacky, and works like Loctite, but without having to use a torch to get the screw out again. It’s an old, old gunsmiths trick.

I use one every single day and love them. I have 6 right now and just sent in a blade to have a custom made. It's the only sheath I've found that I can comfortably carry a 4" blade and forget it's even there.

The button snap loop will come with standard. He also offers an IWB clip for extra if you want to carry vertically. This is how my wife carries her candiru since she doesn't wear a belt.
