I was recently comparing prices on the Izula aswell. Cheapest i found on ebay was $48.99 shipped. Knifeworks has it for $41.95 + shipping. I ended up using them since i also wanted to order the ESEE 4 at the same time to save on shipping.

Thanks for the info.  Here in Texas you can have any length on your own land or while "engaged in a sporting activity such as hunting", but you can not EDC or keep in your vehicle knives longer than 5.5 inches.  I want a good knife for my jump kit and the -5 will probably it.  No stores carry them around here and have not seen them at gun shows so will have to order blind, other than the pictures here.

Just wanted to interject that this is not true. The law against Handguns, Illegal knives and Clubs does not apply inside your vehicle or directly en route to your home or vehicle.  You can't carry elsewhere but you can carry in your car.

I just ordered a second ESEE-4P Desert Tan and a Pink Izula(for my wife on her birthday in December.....ssshhhhhhh)

I would get a 3 but I want a kydex sheath standard with it as I'm not a fan of the molded ones (no real reason just don't like them).

I'm thinking of getting rid of my ESEE-5S and getting another 4 and possibly a 3 despite the sheath.

Just curious why you dont like the 5? Or atleast why you would prefer a 4 over the 5?

I've been thinking about ordering a 5, or maybe even a 6, to use as a general camping/survival knife but i go back and forth whether the 4 i already own is big enough or not.

Get the -3. Put the the factory sheath back and order a GodSpeed sheath. He does nice work. I think for the -3 sized knives they run $30-35 ish. And if your trading the -5 for something, I'd get the -6.

Knifeworks is good people and a great business I'll definitely purchase from again. Placed several orders with them including a rather large one with custom engraving - they do a great job and have super fast turnaround times.

I was writing a mini review on the knife and decided to play.

Here is the mini review.

Well, after almost a month of using my Izula II, I think I am ready to give a little review.

I wanted a pocket fixed blade to carry everyday. The Izula II looked like the perfect candidate.

The size of this knife and it's sheath fits perfectly in the front pocket of a pair of jeans. It carries well and always seems to be oriented in the correct position. Great.

So the little knife carries well but how does it cut? From the start I felt the edge was a bit on the blunt side, (still very sharp, just the angle of the edge left me wanting a better slicer) so I beveled and polished the edge more to my liking.

Here it is with the carbon Opinel #7 I typically carry as well and you can kind-of  see the tune up I gave the factory edge.

Now it cuts and slices like a champ. I have used it from everything from cutting fruit, to cutting a fresh mounting surface for a 3/4 inch thick fiber reinforced mud flap on a dump truck.

The little knife cut it all with ease. So I decided to try something a little more difficult, just for fun I wanted to see if the little Izula could cut down a small tree. While not something most people do with a small knife (The blade is only 2.65 inches and the over all length is 6.75 inches.)I figured since it is touted as a small survival knife, it is conceivable it could be pressed into service to build a small shelter.

After finding a good heavy stick I proceeded to baton down a small tree. Granted it took a bit more time than using an axe or a saw, but it worked and the blade even held a great edge afterward.

All in all I am very impressed with the knife. The 1095 carbon steel takes a great edge and offers a great mix of toughness and edge retention. The scales on the knife are canvas micarta and extremely comfortable. The sheath works great for pocket carry and is very positive in its retention.  This has become my favorite edc knife, and I enjoy having a sturdy fixed blade pocket knife way more than I would have imagined.

Nice micro review! The polish looks really nice on that blade edge.

The review says the ant was making shelter.

After alot of research, we just purchased a bunch of Izulas for our unit. We got about 15-20 of each color with our unit patch on them.

I hope everyone will like them, I know I will.

BTW,ESEE customer service was amazing; they replied to my email with what I needed for a unit order within 10 minutes! One of the smoothest purchases I've ever done and a great deal.

Thanks ESEE

ESEE 4 number 2 arrived in the mail today. Didnt plan on buying it, but i couldnt pass on the price.

Also a few pics of my wifes survival kit. Mine will be similar except an ESEE 6 in a Spec Ops sheath as soon as the sheath arrives.

*still working on the contents a bit. Going to replace the thread with dental floss or something similar and i want to add more paracord. But, its coming along nicely and i still have some room in the tin and pouch.

I got my wife's pink Izula and my ESEE-4 in on Friday and while trying to get the Izula out of the sheath misplaced my left index finger and sliced it down to the bone

Now it will come out easy but that first time was like it was welded in.  I should have used some paracord to tie of from the sheath but was in a hurry I guess.

I finally got the gash to stay closed today but should have went and gotten a couple of stitches I think...oh well.

Oh and she opened the box so that gift isn't going to work now for her birthday that's in December  I wrapped the handle in paracord and added a length of it to the sheath and she really likes using it as a neck knife.

Once her Nalgene bottles and a couple other things come in her day pack will be complete

so after looking through this thread i've about decided i cant live without an ESEE 3.  my only question is this, for all these colored blades, how are u guys sharpening them without messing up the finish on your blades?  seems like they'd be scratched all to hell from sharpening all the time!

while i dont disagree, no one in this thread seems to have scratched up knives, so there has to be some trick to sharpening them without damaging the finish.

I'm not sure of a sharpening system or type that touches anything but the blade edge. So if the knife is dull enough that it needs to take the edge back some, you end up taking a little of the finish off. But besides for that the sharpener will not scratch the edge.

I have taken the edges back on ESEE knifes and then polished the blades. The finish is very tough and it holds fine to sharpening.

EDIT- By the time I finally hit submit, the penguin showed up.

[#40]
If you use them to cut more than just paper, tape, 550 cord and other small things you will not mess up the finish. Ill try and get a picture latter tonight but my 5 has some of the finish missing on the middle part of the blade but I have chopped and split a ton of wood with mine. I have really abused it and I still have only lost a small amount. The coating holds up much better than one would think.

Even my Izula has split some small pieces of wood and the finish is all there but is just has a few marks on it. I still have yet to cut anything major with my 3!

Heres some pics. It really isnt that bad for what all I have done with the 5. I have been using if for about two years now and I have never touched the blade with a sharpener. It still cuts paper like it was brand new!
