I recently replaced the olive green cord with the blaze orange, to go along with my VG 4.

Photo request. Does anyone have a 4HM or a 3HM they can show compared to a regular 3 or a 4?

I'm mostly interested in seeing a direct compare to the handles for size in comparison to the blade and total OAL.

I got a 6 a week ago from Knife Works without the sheath for $87. Then I made some sheaths for it. The Junglas can be had for $112 I think without the sheath. Just not sure if I have any kind of use for something that big though since I already have a good machete.

Just did some mustard patina followed by vinegar paper towel wrap and lubed with clp. Got her at noon and she's looking good by 4!

I streaked it with mustard and let it sit 45 minutes before I smeared what was left

Attachment Attached File

Left me with something like this after about an hour or so

Then I got out the vinegar and soaked it in the paper towel, and folded that around the blade

After another hour...

I rinsed it off lightly as to not take off patina and then hit it with gun oil

I'm glad you like it! I was very happy with the results and contrary to looking gritty, it's butter smooth and sharp as hell. Don't forget to patina the spine or you'll end up with a new looking spine on a beat up patina blade

Next time, I'd suggest you remove the scales to do that. It's easier to get a good patina on the spine when they are not on.

If you want colors... slap it between a couple cheap steaks or hamburger patties.

I appreciate the advice! My reason I didn't was IIRC bladeforums?

Somewhere esee dealt with too many stripped screws and broken bits, and they called out people to stop breaking their crap by over tightening or fixing what isn't broke. I have been trying to not screw with things lately, and i felt id listen to their advice and leave it assembled but I will try to get some color in it!

Remember these are 3/16 screws with only 3/16 of actual useable threaded area (AT MOST) don't gorilla them and things will be fine. I do have the TKC scales on most of my Esee's and really like them. Just got a custom set made by a member of the esee forum for my Candaru. Amazing little knife just got more amazing.

lol somehow missile techs can screw together a ballistic missile using less than 80 inch/pounds, but knuckleheads are breaking the screws on their knife handles.

Just a random post to this thread to give a quick report:

Compared to the Ontario Rat-3 I have

1.  Much more solid feeling knife.  It is thicker, which probably helps.
2.  The steel's heat treat feels better in sharpening, and took to a sharp edge much better than the Ontario.
3.  Sheath is 100% better, the forming is better, the quality of the plastic is better, the clip is better.

I still like the Rat-3 for what it is, but the ESEE product is way better in all the right ways.

was at a private opening for a cabelas. we had employee discount 20% off. saw the esse 6p and esse5. i'm new to esses and looking for my first. couldn't make a decision . the 5 was thick as hell. with the discount it came out to $270 which still seemed pricy compared to online. what's a good first esse. i'd like to use it for our doors or course and if i had to cut wood with it.

For actual bushcraft work. The LS is the ideal one to me.

Other than that, the RB3 is also great. Reality is, you'll be fine with whatever you select. you'll end up likely getting a few more, and choose a favorite from them.

Anyone make scales for the 3HM? I've looked at TKC, but they only seem to make offerings for the 3 series. To my untrained eye, these do not look like they'll fit correctly. First ESEE ever just purchased off the EE, looking for kydex and scale options.  Thanks for any suggestions all, really looking forward to starting another habit.

I have not seen any aftermarket scales for the. Him series. The OEM ones look pretty good to me. Similar to the RB3. I haven't liked the OEM scales till I handled an RB3.

I got mine. Scales are too small for my hands.  After a minor amount of use and hotspots start forming.  I wrapped it with hockey tape for now but the sheath does not work with the friction tape.  Looking to add aftermarket scales when available.  It would be cool if aftermarket scales were the same color as the original.
My hands don't always fit in XL gloves so my larger grip ESEE 4HM is getting extra use in the meantime.

I've got a bit of troglodyte in the bloodline somewhere, most stock scales cause issues for me as well.  I think I read that TKC is working on G10 replacement scales for it, the ones they do for the other ESEE knives work much better for me.

All right I got a question anyone EDC the Candiru. I'm looking for a some what concealable knife for pocket carry. I think the Izula is to large to pocket carry.

I will be ordering the G10 scales also.

My kids do, but you would need a new sheath.  The one that comes with the knife would not be good for pocket carry.  Also, after you add scales, it can be pretty thick.

For it's size, I think it is a very capable knife.

How are you sharpening?  Might want to change the angle if it's rolling that easy.  And if you want it smooth, your going to have to strop with polish for a while.
