How well will my 1/2" AR500 steel targets hold up against a 50bmg? I have several but I do not want to destroy them. Thanks!

Plain ball ammo is fine. Anything AP will put a hole in it.

not very well and it will get blown off chains or what ever by the 50 unless its one big ass piece of steel. 1/2 in not very thick for a 50.

I have been using a manhole cover for my 50BMG target.  It's only taken about 20 or so rounds and its pretty much gone.  I recently picked up a 3/4" AR500 plate and just got it hung up the other day.  Haven't been able to shoot it yet.  Got it on sale for $130 shipped.  12"x20" torso from X-Steel targets.  Plate

I have some 1/2" but have never been brave enough to shoot it.

My nephew brought over his 82a1 he just got and shot one of my 3/8" ar500 plates. I'll take a pic later but it dented it, put a crack in about a half of the plate, ripped it off one of the rubber straps and flipped it over the pipe one full turn. This was at 100. I hadnt ever shot my steel with my 50 and was curious. No i know, dont do it.

A club I used to shoot at bought 1" AR500 just for the 50s, and threatened expulsion from the club if you shot your 50 at anything other than the 1"steel.   50 cal was destroying everything else.

My 1/2" AR500 steel targets have held up well against a 50bmg using FMJ at 400 yards for about 75 hits so far.  Not even a scratch on them. Just don't use any AP or API.

Zoom in and you can see the crack.

Distance matters, you need to get the velocities down. (Remember kinetic energy E = m*v^2)

I dont own or shoot one so I won't make any exact figures of what's safe and what's not, but 3/8 is pretty much guaranteed to get ruined and 1/2 I wouldn't shoot any less than several hundred yards. Thicker is better. Further is better.

I donated a 15" diameter 3/4" thick AR-500 target to the Alliance Nebraska Rifle Club. We use it at FCSA 1000 yard matches on Sight-In day. Its been shot with brass solids, Amax, Ball, and an occasional AP round, with no damage, but we set it up at 1100 yards in front of berm. So far, no damage to it.

The FCSA is the only group of 50BMG shooters allowed on this range, due to others coming in and blasting all other equipment used for other matches. So, be careful WHAT you shoot, WHAT you leave on range, and WHAT you can do to improve the range. Otherwise we will continue to lose access to the ranges we currently have access to.

Thanks for all of the replies! Right now my range is my private land so no worries there and I have the targets I plan to shoot out at 500 yards. They are 1/2" thick and one is 35 1/2" wide x 31 1/2" tall, it's very heavy. The rest are 18"x36" by 1/2" thick. I don't think I'll have to worry about them spinning around the hanging pipe.
Thanks again!

You should be safe.

Just be careful who you invite, inspect their ammo. Ball is magnetic, AP is magnetic, API is magnetic, but all three have different attraction rates. Keep a sample in your inspection kit. Otherwise most Match ammo will be safe to shoot at 500 yards - however I have a way to push an 800 grain projectile at over 3100 fps. The fact that it is solid brass will brass plate your steel target but full energy will be transferred upon impact. It may bend your 1/2" targets.

Be SAFE, have FUN.

I have 100 rounds of American Eagle 50 BMG 660 grain FMJ XM33C, in the black box. A magnet is attracted to it also. I've found some more of this on line and will order more soon. I am hoping this is just plain ball ammo.

My buddy (accidentally) shot my 1/2" AR500 steel at 100 yards with my M82A1 with federal ball.  It dented it and knocked it over, but the ricochet went right through the metal base.

I was able to get my scope on today, bore sighted and zero'd at 100 yards. I didn't use my steel for 100 yards, I hauled some white oak log ends out to my spot and used them as the back stop. That stopped them!
At 300, 400 and 500 yards my 1/2" AR500 just got the paint knocked off!! No dents, dimples or broken targets!!
