Been thinking its time for a 50 cal. I'd like to get a semi auto - perhaps with the potential for a suppressor. I've been eyeballing an M107 or a BFG-50A specifically but I want to make sure I haven't missed others to take into consideration.

I've sen one made by Vigilance Rifles but not much information out there about it. I've seen reports that Barrett semis can suffer from accuracy issues. Serbu seems to be alright baring some minor, and likely resolved, cycling problems.

What else is out there?

1. Leader 50A1. http://stgeorgearms.com This sounds good on paper. However, there are questions as to wether they are on production

2. Gepard GM6 Lynx. This one is available in Canada. Not sure in the US. It looks like it's recoil operated, similar to Barrett M82 and M107 which would make it very reliable but with inherent accuracy problems.

There are probably one or two more other than the other three mentioned but I probably wouldn't go there. Well may be if Accuracy International sold their semi in the US, but that would be a $ 20,000 plus proposition.

I have a Serbu BFG50FA and love it. I have never seen in person or shot a Barrett though.

The Barret is very reliable which is important to me. Some one posted of a 82 or 107 that shoots under 10" at 1000 yds.

I'm seeing people report 2 MOA or more for the majority of Barrett semi autos.

Haven't had my 82a1 for very long but at least I have a place to shoot 15 minutes from the house. Only draw back is the furthest I can shoot at the River Bend Gun Club is 600 yards prone. Here is my 10 round group at 600 yards with federal ball ammo. Not great but I'm sure I can do better with more practice and better ammo. Once I get some more range time I've got to find a 1000 yard range.

Good enough to blow a big friggin hole in whatever it hits. If you reload, gets some AP for emergencies.

Besides the ones the OP posted, to my knowledge the only other semi is the Harris Gun Works M96. If you saw the original Robocop movies, Robocop used one.

I thought that was a Pauza P-50 used in the Robocop movie?

I have a Serbu 50A, serial number 15.  It runs great.

So why then do I hear and read that the 82 is not very accurate?  That printing at 600yds with factory ball seems to dispute the lack of accuracy claims against the 82.

One of our own respected members here, who used to work for Barrett, is saying the same thing in this other thread and its not the only place I'm hearing it from:

I have a serbu semi, it is rock solid now that I figured out how to resize my brass.

Also, Serbu has outstanding customer service.

Mark Serbu answers the office phone on many occasions.  Try and find any other gun manufacturer where the owner answers the phone.

Yes. They were very responsive to an email I sent. This reply (in part) from Jim Willard in regards of using a suppressor with the BFG-50A may be of interest...

The adjustable gas block is still in development for use with a suppressor. We have done very little testing regarding different suppressor models with the current gas system set up and as a result we don't endorse any specific model. Customers who do use a suppressor with their BFG-50A have reported mixed results of everything from functioning flawlessly to failure to cycle and signs of overpressure. I specifically remember a customer saying his worked perfectly with the SEG Monument; however, we haven't tested it and therefore don't endorse it or any other model.

Looks like better or official suppressor support is incoming.

Thanks for the link Foxxz, it was a good read. I might have made a different decision if I would have read that first but now that I have mine I don't regret it.

If that is a standard MR target for 600 yds the 10 ring is 2 MOA.

I don't know to be honest. I didn't supply the target, the gun club did. I had to do what they call a Super gun checkout at my gun club to prove I was proficient with my 50 cal so I would be allowed to shoot it there. I still have the target and could put a measuring tape on it And post a picture.

Sorry for the glare in the picture. My wife surprised me and framed it for me for Christmas. She new I was hanging onto it because it was my first time shooting 600 yards with my Barrett. The 7 ring out to out is a little less than 18 inches. What I do know is that it sure looked small at 14x lol

Actually it was a Barrett

Nope.  In the original Robocop movie, they used Pauza P-50 rifles.  The Barrett was used later in Robocop 2 and/or Robocop 3.
If you google it up, they have the gun pics mixed up between the 3 movies.  You'll have to watch the original film to see what I'm talking about.

Safety Harbor does.
I usually get Walter or his wife.

Also, non-gun: Herbert Cams.
Doug Herbert, Top Fuel racer and company owner regularly answers the phone,
sells tier 1 parts unbeatable cheap, gives (great!) tech advice.

Glad your -50A is rocking like mine does.
it is a great little gun!  :)

I've watched the original more times that I can count - it's a Barrett.  Look at the clip posted above, look at IMFDB, look at the Wiki pictures of the Pauza.... Please cite your source(s) for the Pauza claim.

Only at the end does Robocop have a gun other than his Auto9, and it looks like a Barrett too:

For comparison, the Pauza P-50:

Final nail - Wikipedia says Pauza was developed in 1991.
Original Robocop was 1987.

1st Robocop was a M82. The flat brake and turned down M2 barrels are tells. The barrel spring stubs showing through the front barrel bushing is another.

The one I had, with good shooters and great ammo, couldn't get that kind of group at a hundred yards.

I would have been pissed if i were you JellyBelly. I would have had to go see Barret and have them explain why a 7500$ rifle could only shoot a 5 1/2" group at 100 yards.

You could also purchase a semi auto M2HB, its a lot heavier, less portable, but belt fed and you can put a crank on it to increase your fire rate :)
