THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I haven't taken my out for about two years due to work and life, and its just a pain in the ass to find a place to shoot a 50bmg in California. That aside, on two recent trips, I found the rifle failing to fire about 60% of the time. I'm always scared of a hang fire so I'd hold the rifle in place for about 10-20 seconds after pulling the trigger. Then I'd eject the ammo, check the primer and usually notice a very faint primer indent or no indent at all. I ran the same round through and usually it would fire the 2nd or 3rd time around. This occurred with all sorts of ammo, from Talon, to Hornady match, to the Brazillian CBC. Does this sound like just a light firing pin strike? Maybe I need to replace the firing pin spring? I took the bolt apart today and decided to clean the living shit out of it and lube it real good afterwards. I;m hoping that resolves the issue. Thanks for any insight. |

Has it been left sitting with the firing pin in the cocked position? Sounds like you just need to replace the spring.

Is your brass sized too short, or is your chamber long?
Reason I ask is that my State Arms chamber is 0.023" longer to shoulder than my AR-50. I recently found this out the hard way. Initially I thought is was due to not "arming" the CCI#35 primer, but that was the wrong fix in my case. I had originally intended to use that lot of brass in my AR-50 and sized it accordingly, then changed my mind and used that lot in my State Arms Shorty rifle. I've also had some lots of factory loaded rounds not firing in the State Arms rifle, and thought that I had a high occurance of "duds". Now I know better. The State Arms rifle's barrel will be set back this Winter and re-chambered with a "tighter"chamber. Ed, Are you aware of this happening in any of your SA rifles? |

Thats a negative on leaving it cocked position. I tore down the bolt today and going to clean the snot out of it along with the bolt face, and clean out the chamber too. Hopefully that'll clear out any potential debris that might be causing the hangup.
I'll let you know with a follow up. I doubt the chamber is out of spec, since I used to shoot all sorts of ammo before I took a break from it. THe same ammo that used to fire well were no longer firing. We'll see. Thanks gents! |
