I have a State Arms rifle. Curious what the heaviest slugs are.

If you have a 1-15 twist about 850, personally I wouldn't go heavier then a spotter tracer which is just a little lighter. If you go with a 1-9.5 then you can go heavier but you'll have to find someone to turn solids and it won't be cheap.

Yes, it's a heavy, stainless 30" barrel with a 1-15" twist. What kind of velocity would be achievable out of a 30" barrel with an 850gr slug?

Hard to say, do you have to live through it?

Me personally, I wouldn't use more then 200 grs. of powder behind a bullet that heavy. Might get you 2,300 or so FPS +/- 100 FPS.

If the powder used was IMR5010 or WC860 I agree 1000%
(I load spotters to 190)

...there are slower burning powders for heavy projo's which will allow better case filling
which should, in theory, give you a more consistant pressure curve:

850 grain Solid (Barnes)
Vihtavuori 20N29 214.7 gr. 2,447 (start)
Vihtavuori 20N29 238.0 gr. 2,716 (Max)

I used 250 grains of Reloder50 behind a Lehigh 510-130 solid brass bullet that weigh 800 grains in my State Arms rifle with a 30" stainless walter Lothar barrel.
The loading is stout but shot "greens" at FCSA World Championships in Raton,NM before my trigger spring broke during Relay 4 - 3rd string on first day. In my rush to fire during record period, I put two rounds off target after wind conditions changed drastically.

Damn, was it a compressed load?

Yeah, forgot about the VV powders, wonder which is slower burning? The VV or the RL50, guess I'll have to look it up later.

I have the same barrel. What do you figure the velocity on those is?

Don't know. My chronograph has a 50CAL hole thru it lengthways.
NOTE TO SELF: Remember heigth of scope above bore of gun, allow for it when shooting (over) chronograph.

Not quite compressed, because of long throats in both of my rifles, I seat only about 0.135" of rear driving band in mouth of case.

VV is slowest, then Reloder50, then H50BMG = this is only for quality reloading powders, some others may slide in somewhere.

H50BMG is the most common and most used.
