THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Really thinking about purchasing SHTF 50 mag fed, but not sure on barrel length. 18 " seems too short, 22 " would be easier to tote around, so, already seems like I would like the 22 " version, rather than the 29 " version. Think Steyr is 29 # or so with scope and rings, so would expect a LOT more recoil. Would get fluted barrel. So, pro's, con's, sure fluted barrel would be worth the cost. Anyone know what lead time is on order?: Will call tomorrow. In summary, just wondering about 22 " barrel, and any experience one has with this upper. Thank You. |

I like the idea of being able to shoot a .50 off-hand. For that reason, I'd definitely go with the 18.5 inch barrel + flutes and anything else to make it lighter.
The way I see it, having a long barrel (mine is 29-in) it makes more sense to go all the way in going shorter. I've read that the muzzle brake makes the short barrels easy to shoot since there is so much extra gas pressure to make it work. I'd sure like to hear from folks that have shorter .50's as to how they shoot! |

TNX for reply, not looking for 'tack-driver', already have that, guess will research barrel length-fps, but a "light' 50 would be nice.
Can't recall who my carry case is made by, stainless and aluminum with dolly wheels; believe Steyr loaded in case weighs 80 # or so. |

I never really cared for the side-magazine over a single shot enough to want it on a rifle that is fired from a rest or bipod. However, the idea of a walk-around "plinker", an 18.5 inch bbl (fired off-hand) would make the side magazine a welcome upgrade. |

One of my .50's has an 18" barrel and it shoots well. I never tried shooting it at a distance for accuracy but my 12 year old daughter shot it in a 1000 yard match ( her first match) and she was able to shoot 13" groups with 705 grain semi-bore rider bullets, and get 2nd place in the match. She had only fired less than 10 rounds in her life prior to the match. I did shoot this short barrel at 2,200 yards and was able to hit a big empty propane tank with API hand loads. It can be shot off hand but not accurately, it's still pretty damn heavy.

Thanks for the info, 4-6 week back log on mag fed upper.
Curious if loaded 5 round mag would make rifle want to lean to the left? |

Here is me trying two rounds through mine. Was shooting it at my father's place and there were some people without power in the area and windows open. I did not want to test my luck dumping tons of rounds and getting the locals complaining. I also only boresited. After I do a full zero I will be more likely to dump more rounds at a time during a shooting session.
http://youtu.be/q9ZJH9fn6c0 A lot less recoil than I expected. I would rather shoot this thing than an 870 with high brass. |

Same here. I've had a SHF complete rifle with a 22 inch barrel for about a year. I thought the mag would make the rifle lean, but i havent noticed it.
BTW - other than the ease of carrying the rifle around/offhand shooting, I like that the 22" bbl rifle fits in regular gun cases/safes. |

Still debating 18 " or 22 " upper.
Lose a lot of MV-FPS, however, more something to 'play' with than anything else. |

Still plenty accurate even with downloaded spotter-tracers at 1000 yards... (they sure do arc high, like indirect fire! LOL!) It looks better to me too... just the proportions seem nice... but that is all subjective crap.

I'm going to go with the 22" soon . I saw a chart and the fps gain was pretty good for the 4" of extra barrel . If its too heavy , I may flute the barrel after I get it .

Do you have the tool to flute it?
In the form of a tool I mean a mill with a rotory table. |

I recently bought a Clausing mill, rotary table, and lots of tooling... I really really really want to play around with a bbl and some ball mills ![]() |

Just ordered 18" fluted upper, bi-pod, stock with elevation, 5 mags, carry handle, and a few odds and ends.
Now, the WAIT! 4-6 weeks. Plenty of time to figure which AR I shoot least so I have a lower, probably just get another lower. As per OP, have Steyr 50, just wanted something a bit lighter. Thanks for advice. |

Changed order to Non-Fluted, 18" barrel is only fluted on last 6"; Staff at SHF told me longest barrel they make, think 30" shed 8 ounces, off weight by fluting, so, my $200.00 fluting would not decrease weight much. Nice people, even suggested fluting short barrel was not worth the extra $200.00. to save a couple ounces, more mags! |
