Anyone use their scar 17 a their primary carbine?

1-4/6 or red dot and a light?

I'm talking over a 5.56 gun for all purposes.

Anything I consider to be a go to rifle is wearing a red dot.

i wouldn't be against a lpv but I don't need magnification and I like the size and weight of a red dot for  toting around in my truck.

As a primary carbine, I'd choose 5.56 over 7.62 all day long. We're talking a handy, light carbine with low ammunition weight, not a DMR or GPMG.

I set mine up to be a handy carbine. I'm avoiding high power optics and other doo-dads because of weight. I figure this comes in at under 10lbs. Pretty manageable as is.

4x acog, surefire mini, geissele, and sling.

I am thinking of doing the same thing. I think it would make a great all-arounder!

I'm thinking about doing it if I can pick up a Scar from a buddy. I would use a 1-4 just since I think 308 has the ability to punch out a bit harder and farther than a 223. Plus anything I want to use past 100 yards I want magnified.

Thinking it would be great once I leave the house, but not sure I want/need to touch off a 308 out of a shorty inside

If SHTF my SCAR would be my primary carbine.  As of right now it is far cheaper to feed an AR than my SCAR.

Despite having half a dozen ARs, the 17 is quickly becoming my favorite. Currently I have a TLR-1 and an Aimpoint M2 on mine, so pretty basic but also rock solid.

1-whatever optics are nice, but I don't see anyone throwing around a scope like you do an Aimpoint & having it survive.

You simply can't carry enough ammo for a 308 to have it be your primary long gun.

People have been carrying 7.62 combat loads for years. I've done it in RC East with an EBR or a M110... it is obviously heavier but its being done every day.

I panic bought a black SCAR 17 last year and have been slowly setting it up. I have a Geissele mount for a Vortex Razor HD 1x6 (don't have the optic yet), a sling, mags, Gemtech mount for the One and about 1K rounds of American Eagle 76251m1a ammo.

If HPA passes, I'll buy the One suppressor, if not either the Geissele Super SCAR or the Vortex Razor will be the next purchase.

This will be my primary Carbine

It's doable...11.6 lbs as shown with an empty mag. Not much heavier than a similarly equipped 5.56 AR.  One mag in the rifle and 4 on the chest rig. Option of tossing 5 more in a pack for 200 rnds total.

Geissele Super SCAR trigger
FN Sling
AAC 51T flash hider
AAC 7.62 SDN-6
PMM 1.35 Gas Jet
KAC handstop
FDE Trijicon TA-11HG 308 M240

If I'm going into that kind of fight I'll take my ps90 and 5.7, then I could carry close to 1000 rounds.

Still think I'll stick with one of my SCARs as my primary.

Standard load for my friends team when in Africa and when dismounted in Afghanistan. 13 mags. People made fun of him for it but there was that one time that rotor support arrived 8 hours and 12 mags into the fight.

Never carried more than 8 without issue in RC South and East. Burned up 4-5 on several occasions but the volume shooting is why we have MK48's and SAW's. Regardless, we aren't talking about fighting in SE Asia. Think more "Patrol rifle" for the purposes of being an armed civilian. If Katrina style shit goes down in my neighborhood I'd feel perfectly comfortable with 120rnds of .308 to take care of business.

Did any of you guys questioning my comment use your rifle as a supplement to a team of regular riflemen? I'm going into this question with the understanding that you are not in a DMR or support role and ~300 rounds should be about right. 300 rounds of 308 will put a hurting on your mobility...

I've had my 17 for a few weeks and it's quickly becoming my favorite. I like to describe it as it's not great at anything but it's good at everything.

Next on the list is a Geissele Super Scar and SBR.

Comparing loadouts of SOF or equivalent working in a hostile environment to a civilian "go-to" rifle loadout are apples to oranges. I'd be more concerned with penetration of building materials in the area you live, vehicle penetration, and accuracy then carrying as many rounds as possible.

If FN had not gone with a retardedly slow twist...could have done much better on the barrel.

My only grip of the rifle other than the shit stock trigger. Someone could make a killing selling high quality CHF chrome lined 12", 16", and 20" 1/10 barrels with a profile diameter increase at the muzzle to alleviate shoulder issues with muzzle devices. Would just need a bunch of FN gas blocks.

Agreed.

The SCAR has huge potential.

Add a longer rail, metal lower, better stock, and fast twist barrel with better profile...and it truly would have been a game changer.

As it stands, it is an eccentric but functional also ran.

by the time you make all those changes, it weighs as much as any other AR10 platform rifle and loses a huge part of its appeal.

The rail and lower are fine. A metal stock latch and different twist barrel would have a negligible impact on weight. The difference is reliability. Large frame AR's are not nearly as reliable as their smaller 5.56 counterparts...even high end ones. My SR-25 choked on ammo that the SCAR easily eats (ZQI for example)...

I've thought about using my Scar-17 as a primary.  It wears a TA11H ACOG in a LaRue SDO mount.  The only other mods include:  SureFire M600C Scout, Tango Down Mk46 VFG, Geiselle Super Scar Trigger.

Ultimately I think the Scar-17 vs a quality 5.56 (like a Scar-16) decision is the same as 45Acp vs 9mm:

- The 9mm is easier to shoot than the 45Acp
- The 9mm holds more rounds than the 45Acp
- The 9mm is cheaper to shoot than the 45Acp
- The 9mm is slightly smaller and lighter than the 45Acp
- The 45Acp has greater potential for quickly ending a threat.

Replace "9mm" with "5.56x45" and "45Acp" with "Scar-17" and that's how my decision process ended.

Ultimately it came down to: do I want to carry more ammo.  The answer is yes.

Now plug in 308 turning cover into concealment.

At face value, it takes 3- 55 gr bullets to weigh as much as one 147 gr. And it still wont do the same work.

I considered that.  I'd still rather have 3:1 ammo over the possibility of increasing my penetration (yes, I agree the 762 has advantages over 556 but I decided it was not so profound as to warrant a 120rd payload vs a 300rd payload).

ETA: If I were younger and had the time to keep in better physical shape (work in a professional office 10+ hours a day) I would use a SCAR-H because I would be able to carry more 762 ammo.   As it is, 120rds just doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy.

This.

Current 7.62 is lackluster.  AP 5.56 does just about everything AP 7.62 can do.  There is also real room to modernize AP loads in both calibers.

Either way, you gain more from velocity in the AP world than you do from going 5.56 to 7.62.

There are some exotics that change that situation...but generally available black tip 5.56 is pretty good overall.
