Just curious why Black SCAR 16/17s aren't as popular as FDE. Is there a preference? Is FDE more desirable because SOCOM uses/used it? I can't figure it out. And I feel the preference to get FDE runs across the board (I.e. Tavor/x95/AR paltform etc) I feel like no one wants/likes black. Am I wrong?

I wanted it because it's something different than another black rifle.

I prefer black rifles. I dont like FDE... I do have an FDE SCAR though.
I dont know why, but it seemed like FDE was just more natural for the gun. Sort of like it was intended to be FDE, and black was a secondary thought or something... I dont know. The only other color I really like on my guns other than black, that isnt wood, is OD Green. The SCAR being the exception, like I said, it just seems like the color the gun is "supposed" to be or something. |
It really depends on the gun, for example I prefer FDE Scars, and FDE fnx 45 tac. I prefer a HK USP 45 Tac. in black. as well as most other HKs.
The FDE is just more appealing to my eyes and its a more practical all around color.

I wanted an FDE SCAR 17s. However, when I purchased mine several weeks before the Mocha Messiah was coronated for the second time, only black could be found. Looking back, that's kind of strange.

Prefer black for the Scar. Too much variability in FDE from FN. Some look fine, others look like ghetto gold plated. If you can inspect first it might be ok, but I wouldn't buy one sight unseen in FDE.

If you don't go with FDE, how will you pretend you're part of socom?
I fall into the camp that thinks the SCAR looks natural in FDE. I think that was due to the fact that virtually all of the SCARs I saw before I bought mine were FDE.
For most other firearms, I prefer black. The only other gun I have in FDE is a Kriss Vector, and I kind of wish I bought it in black. |
I'm guessing alot of people like the Operator look of the FDE over the black. I personally prefer the FDE because black rifles get hot as hell in the summer in my AO.
Purely looks. I had to go with the 17S in FDE.
I doubt I will buy a second 17S, but if I ever do, I would likely do a 13" barrel in Black with suppressor. |
I'm with Kyle Lamb on FDE... "cat crap brown."
I think it's ugly, but if I was somewhere where it matched my surroundings, I'd consider it. I like black both for looks, and the fact that where I am, there is almost NOWHERE that is a desert tan color. So FDE is no good except for fantasizing that I'm in the desert. The black (or very dark gray, really) look of a parkerized weapon blends very well with the dark earth and forestation, OTOH. |

To a certain extent I think it's become something of a self-reinforcing cycle.
If I were in the market for a SCAR right now, I would only really be interested in an FDE version because I know that if I ever needed to sell it, I'd almost certainly be able to sell an FDE for faster and for more than a similar black one. ~Augee |

Never was a fan of FDE. Ever been outside on a full moon night with an FDE rifle. They shine like a hooker's heels.
I went black because I like black and FDE is not a color I like. On top of that the FDE multi color rifle has always been unsightly.
I just wish that more manufacturers produced rifles in shades of Green. Personally, I'm a fan of Magpul's Foliage Green.
Went with the FDE, because it's not an AR, and thus is fine being a different color. Also I like the rainbow of brown shades that FN managed to get on one gun (not a single part matches any other's shade of FDE )
Also I plan to just stick camo tape all over it depending on the season or where I'm hunting, and the tan is a better base color than black. |

IMHO I think it's for a fad more than anything else. Ever since the surge back in like 05' or on the lines of that a ton of weapons manufacturers and equipment companies tried to be to appeal/stand out more to the market. Not only were they making custom setups and gear for our secret squirrel guys but they wanted their civilian market to be on par with their military one.
"Used by the Navy SEALS!" "Exact setup as Delta Force!" etc...etc...etc... Plus with most of recent wars in a dry, middle eastern climate it appealed to the civilian market even more being as the cool in thing. Now you have every company that makes and sells this sort of stuff include the word "tactical" in just about everything. Hell, I can't even find a simple back pack without MOLLE webbing on it nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I love tan, brown or anything similar when it comes to weapon paint schemes but to me it's heavily played out. Even when the SCAR was being tested by SOCOM at the very beginning I think the only color it came in was tan/FDE. |

Most of my 'scary' guns are black lol. How else would they fit into the 'black rifle' category?
First 17S was black. Decided to get FDE for the 2nd one. When that darned 20" barrel finally shows up, it'll probably go on the black one. As for showing up at night, it's 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other. Black is harder to see with the naked eye obviously, but dang do they stick out with NODs. Max |

I dont get that anyway. Where are these people living that a black gun makes so much more sense for the environment over FDE? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I think FDE was released for sale first but that's just a guess. I got mine in FDE just because it was a deal I couldn't pass up (1.6k for a pristine 16). The FDE color on mine is as blotchy as you can get, no consistency whatsoever from stock to end of hand guard.

North and west of Houston-ways? Soil here isn't FDE. Throw that bright tan thing on the ground in the wooded area behind me and you'll be able to pick it out instantly from a long ways off. You'd be much harder pressed to find a dark gray gun. Aim it from the woods beyond the lake near me and you'll stick out like a sore thumb if there's sunlight on you. The brush is so thick it gets practically black in there a very short ways in. Have a dark colored weapon, unless something else on you was shining like your skin, you'd be a lot tougher to pick out. YMMV. View Quote |

Like others, my SCARs are FDE mostly for a change from the black rifle crowd. One thing to note is that how the anodized receiver looks depends very much on the ambient lighting. Mine can be anywhere from light gold to a sickly greenish-gold.
Oh, and it's more accurate. |

It gets better when the PS90 was first offered many early buyers dyed tier ps90s black.

Some people say they look sexier. Personally, I like redheads . I think a lot of people are tired of black rifles. We've all seen 200,000,000 black AR15s. Something different (rifle type and color) is exciting. Why does MagPul introduce a different color of plastic part every 4 or 5 minutes? Barbie needs a new dress. |
