So, I've pretty much decided on a SCAR 17 as my post deployment gift to myself. Now comes the time to choose a viable optic for it. I'd love to get a VCOG or an Elcan 1.5-6X, but I really feel that a .308 deserves a 10X. With that being said, I've had my eyes on three scopes in particular: the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10X32, the Leupold Mk.4 LR/T 3.5-10X40, and the Nightforce NXS 2.5-10X32. Does anyone have any experience with any of these scopes? Also, I've heard that the 17 is an optics eater. Is there any truth to that? Id rather not drop close to $2K on a scope just to have the gun break it. I have lots of experience with AR's but next to none with the SCAR, so any help would be appreciated.

Buy a quality mount for the scope.  Go with the kind that has the rings directly over the base.  An extended eye relief "scout" style mount is not needed.

Take a long look at the Leupold MK8 1-8, or the MK6 3-18.  Amongst my group of friends we have scarH's with both optics mounted and zero problems.  Used both to shoot out to 1000Meters.

On the optics eating thing.  Breaking cheap shit optics in cheap shit mounts does not equal an optics eating problem when using quality optics in quality mounts.  The other part to buying a quality optic, is the quality optic warranty.  If you have a problem, the manufacturer will take care of you.

I have a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 on my SCAR 17 most of the time in a Larue LT104 and had zero issues with the setup.  I also have a Vortex Viper 6-20x44 in a LT111 mount I use occasionally on my SCAR it has been a great setup with the QD mount on the scopes.  I keep DOPE sheets on the rifle so I know exactly where to adjust it for X Y & Z rifles.

I just bought an ACOG for mine, I got rid of a long range LR308 for the battle rifle, because i am 99% of the time, inside 300 yards for all my shooting here in the midwest

I have the NF 2.5x10x42 on mine. I love it. I have put 300 rounds through her since I had her mounted. Light, great eyebox and the glass is super clear. I considered the Leupold MK IV but wanted matching mil/mil turrets reticle, I went with the MRad reticle o  mine. I have it in a Bobro Scar mount, I picked it up from Sport Optics's Jay.

I still want an Elcan 1-4 for another 17 SBRd down the road with a can. http://i.imgur.com/vBBBNA7.jpg

I voted other. I have a Trijicon Accupoint in 1-4 with green triangle chevron. I like this because I never have to worry about batteries. Clear glass in 30mm tube. While I would prefer more magnification (1-8 would be perfect), I'm really happy with this scope.

Hope this helps,
Chris

What's your intended purpose, OP? Battle rifle out to 800yds tops or are you trying for a DMR-style set-up?

Two of my buddies have 17s - one's running an Elcan 1.5x-6x and the other a Nightforce (can't recall the model).

7-800m battle rifle is what I'm going for. Any more and I'd get a higher caliber and a much more powerful scope. The idea is to be able to reach out and touch someone at distance, but not add too much weight to the gun with a huge scope. Plus I think that 2/3-10X is an ideal range for a rifle like the SCAR with a 16" barrel.

Mine has  a NF 2.5-10x42 on it right now but at the time this scope wasn't available. Now that it's on the market, this would be my choice.

FWIW, I've got a Leupold MK6 1-6 on my 17 and it has been solid. Part of me wishes I had gone with the 3-18x, but I don't anticipate making long range shots and the true 1x is nice.

I never could decide on one "do all" scope for a SCAR17 so I ended up with one setup for distance (Nightforce NXS 3.5-15) and one for closer in (Vortex Razor 1-6). Both are mounted with Aadland mounts; built like a tank.

I did end up going with the 3-18x, but the main reason is I'm mostly spotting for a buddy of mine that's shooting his bolt action at 1k yards. I kinda went the route vincent317 did and got another optic for closer work, Trijicon TR24R. Pretty lightweight and capable optic, though I wish there were some horizontal lines or something on the black vertical line below the triangle that I could use as some kind of reference for longer shots. I'm considering getting the 1-6 to replace it, but it's probably going to be a while.

I like the NF 2.5-10 the best. I've taken all 3 out to 1k. The 2.5-10 seems to be the best bang for size and weight and capabilities.

I know this may seem like a silly question, but is the 2.5-10 of any use closer in? Obviously it wouldn't hold a candle to the Mk.6 or a Razor.

2.5x will work at 10-15 feet just fine. At least in my home, that's well within home defense range.

Bushnell Elite tactical SMRS 1-8.5x24 34Mm. You get 1x both eyes open, you get 8.5x for long range, glass clarity blew my mind, daytime brightt illumination, bad ass reticle, and you can find one used for half the price or less of a mark 8 cqbs and the magnification range is greater.

That 6x48 is super heavy, but often times weight = quality/durability IMHO.

I went with the Vortex 2.5-10.  All the reviews I read were so great I passed in my first original choice a which was the NightForce.  I love it but have not used it much yet.
