Thinking of doing a 14.5 w/pinned hider, any one do this or have pics?  Why or why not?

My thinking is that it saves me the $200 tax stamp and I retail a little more velocity.  I'm also ordering an AAC can for it this summer

One member had his cut and welded a FH on but if I recall it was a 13" barrel with a longer FH.

I've been tempted to have mine done.  But I am running a Griffin Armament two port brake-so I can run the blast shield.  I may (big may) get a suppressor one day...and it might not be from Griffin Armament...so I don't want to have to cut it off.  I should just do it...

Not a 17, but I literally just sent my 16 to be chopped down to 10.5. What are your reservations on cutting it?

basically if i'm being stupid and should just say F'it and SBR and cut it to 12 or 13" and suppress it for a close in gun.  But as it sits, it's my only long gun... That's why I was thinking 14.5" to keep it short but still a viable 600+ gun.

if you're going to suppress it, go as short as possible.  If you want to keep it as your only long gun, go keep it as a rifle and not a sbr.

My SCAR17 is cut to 14.5", with a pinned FH. By the math the original owner and I did at the time, you give up very little velocity, but get a handier rifle. The end result is you still have a gun capable of 600yd+ shots all day long with no issues. If you're wanting to range to 1000yds, then you very likely should be sticking with a different rifle and cartridge all together.

So long as you get the work done by a good smith, and don't mind the cost, I say go for it. You can always SBR and chop it again later.

SOF guys overseas using the 17 are hitting out to 725m with the 13" barrel and the right ammo.

Marvin Pitts cut my barrel to 13.7" and pinned the MAMs on my 17.  It went from my favorite rifle to my favorite rifle.  Unbelievable difference.

The SCAR-H/17 seems to require more skill to cut/pin due to the thin barrel, not to mention the $1000 chunk of metal at risk. In the past I've had ADCO do 556 and 9mm AR's which turned out great. The plan is to have someone take my SCAR-H/17 once I have the 762 muzzle device in hand, pending a suppressor. Mine looks just like the FDE specimen posted above this post, except mine wears an Eotech and a magnifier (will have a FDE suppressor some day soon!).

Anyway, are there any SCAR focused shops that do a lot of these cut/pins? I'll start with ADCO first, but the thread seems like it could use more recommendations for SCAR barrel/muzzle device work.

Anybody experience issues with the chrome lining flaking off?

That is my biggest concern.

I'm to paranoid to have mine chopped. Many have done so and are satisfied. As for ballistics w/ a shorter barrel, you are good to go. Rumors from the sand box from shots out to 800 meters w/ a 13".

So does the MAMS bring a 13.7 barrel to 16 oal?

if you are going to have the 17 cut, might as well go to 13 inches and just go through the form1 and do it right.  1.5 inches won't really make that much difference.  well, $200 and about a 90-100 day wait difference.

as many have said before, you still get plenty of range out of the 17 with a 13 inch barrel.

Yep, and I don't have to worry about a tax stamp.  The MAMs is longer than most brakes.

It is STILL my favorite rifle....

That's my buddy 14.5 with sdn6 can.  No problems at all cut or suppressed.

If you don't want Marvin to cut it then drop $1200 and buy the factory 13" barrel and form 1 it.

We do it as well and have a lot of experience with the difficulties in properly cutting and refacing SCAR barrels.  You can't just shove them in a lathe like you can an AR barrel.  Marvin Pitts pioneered this type of work and he did my personal SCAR 16 barrel many years ago.

Ive cut and pinned a 17 and some 16's and many AR barrels and I cant remember there being much difference in cutting an AR barrel vs Scar barrel. Its cut and thread, easy peasy.

Now tapered bolt action barrels ARE different. Takes more time to setup etc.

Anybody know how muc Marvin charges for chop/pin & weld? PM is fine if you don't want to post here.
