I am picking up my new SCAR 17 FDE this weekend. I have the following optics on hand and wanted input as to which one should make the cut for (semi) permanent attachment:

ACOG TA11
Eotech XPS
Aimpoint CompM4
Schmidt & Bender Short Dot 1.1-4x20mm
Elcan M184

Id take the Elcan over the Short Dot.

Decide what you want to do with the scar. I took one to a carbine class with the eotech. Seems like a waste for 308. 556 is faster at close ranges no matter what. I shot a .9" group with federal fusion out of my scar at 100yds with the NF2.5-10 and was excited. Too heavy for a carbine course. Plan to put a 1-8 on it and get a 556 for training. My suggestion is set it up for a DMR.

+1, although I couldnt wait for the US Optics 1-8 to hit the streets, settled for a 1.5-6x DFP.

Right now I am leaning towards the ACOG. The Elcan is nice, but just doesn't feel right on the rifle. The S&B Short Dot (currently on my Hk MR556) is a close 2nd. Pics coming soon !!

None of the above.

Check out the Vortex Viper 1-4X24 scope with the 2" offset quick release mount.

If you're not a "brand-whore," this scope will fit the bill perfectly and has a lifetime, no-questions-asked warranty.

I've had it on my FN SCAR 17 rifle for the last year-and-a-half with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Check out the excellent review on AR15.com of the scope, mount, and rifle.

You won't regret it.

I'm with a previous poster that suggested setting it up as more of a DMR. A SCAR 17 would be one of my last picks as a CQB weapon, although it will configure and would work in a pinch. A .308 likes to stretch its legs out so something that gives some magnification. I've got an ACOG on mine and I'm going to sight it in this weekend. Looking forward to finally shooting at some distance.

I had an ACOG on mine, but I found myself wanting a little more magnification since the gun is very accurate and capable of fairly long range shooting.
My buddy had a FDE Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x and I recently purchased it from him to use on my SCAR. For stretching this fine rifle out to 5-600 yards, I think this will
be the ticket. I may have bought an ELCAN Spectre 6x, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on an optic.

My buddy is in the Marine Corps, and he says that he knows some of the MARSOC guys that use the regular SCAR as a DM/ Sniper rifle just by throwing on a Harris bipod and Schmidt Bender scope,
and shooting M118LR through them. So, we will see how this works out.

I have the EoTech with the LaRue Poboy flip to side on mine now. Not 100% happy with this setup and will most likely pick up an Elcan eventually.
Tried the Vortex and just didn't like it. Not a true 1X and has more distortion at the periphery than I like.
Also have used NF 2.5-10 and it works good too but I really like a no BS true 1X.
