I wanted to get on here and thank Tony again for all his help. I have been searching for an m16 locally for a while with the hopes of having enough knowledge with me to aid with inspection of one and the possibility of closing a deal on one. Given this is my first transferable m16, this was an overwhelming task considering the amount of money involved. I have done as much research online as I can during this process. Tony has shared so much knowledge as he normally does on this forum. He has answered numerous questions on emails and has even taken the time to talk. Very nice guy and an asset to the community. I am about to close on a deal this week as long as all goes well. I will post pics soon. Thanks.
Thank you very much Tony!!! |

I did one even better. I bought it from you! Whenever I hear about a good '16 in need of a new home, I always "foster parent" them until I can find them a forever home. Glad you got that one, and I hope it's having a great time (and getting lots of exercise)! |

I might be moving from a frankford receiver to a colt M16 or maybe HRA soon, got a lead for a another good machine gun? I dont need NIB but would like one in spec that has been treated well or at least been through US Anodizing and came out sweet.
We have the frankford and a AR15 conversion so I might bite the bullet for a real one after this house sells |

Right now, all that is around here -- at least, my family is suddenly knee-deep in them -- is Glock 18's and HK MP5's, all factory, all unfired and all NIB. Yeah, it's a really weird story. But alas, they are all post-samples, so unless you're an SOT who can get an LE love letter.... Admin: This is not an ad; it is simply a commentary on the market. I do not personally own the Glocks/HKs, and if they do become available for sale to FFL/SOTs with the appropriate CLEO demo letters, I will make sure the current titled owner does indeed post ads on ar15.com. Which is as it should be. |

I had my son, an 07/02, do the remaining milling, and so he had to engrave his maker's marks discreetly on the right side of the receiver. Since it was already engraved, I gave him one of my M16 sub-16" uppers to mount on it and he filed a form 2. Now I have a clone of my '16. |

Its been a while since I posted... after months of working with a gentleman locally, I decided to move on. The seller lead me to believe for months that the m16 was in good standing to make a smooth transaction. However paperwork is not in good order to proceed.
After searching for about 2 yrs I finally found the one I wanted. Spent more than I had planned but Im happy with what I ended up. Its an a1 in factory carbine configuration, which matches the one and only original form 3. It has been owned by the same dealer since 1977. From the pics and information I have its in mint condition and fired under 100 rounds. Form 3 shows it came directly from Colt. Purchased it for $24k. Paperwork to my dealer should be starting in a matter of days. Now I just have to decide if I want to shoot this thing lol. What do you guys think? |

Congrats on finding the right M16A1 for you! I would shoot -- carefully. But first (according to my time-honored advice), I would remove the entire upper, the buffer and spring, the stock (but not remove the buffer tube, to preserve the original staking), and the fire-control group with pins. Then I would pack them up carefully, LABEL THEM WITH SN, and store them someplace safe. I wold not remove with the takedown pins, trigger guard, BHO release or buffer retaining pins/springs: It's way too easy to scratch the receiver in doing so. Then I would build it up with new complete upper, FCG, stock, buffer/spring. Shoot all you want, because those are the parts that see all the wear. At any time, you can restore it to its original glory. IMPORTANT NOTE: Whenever you go shooting with others, particularly at MG shoots, bring a cloth for the shooting table and another small one to drape over the lower whenever you put it down. Anywhere that brass is flying, I guarantee you that it will magically always land on your pristine lower, nicking the finish. Ask me how I know. Life is too short to not enjoy our precious toys to the fullest. Just do it sensibly and carefully. Have fun!!! |

Tony... thanks!
I was actually thinking about just that if I should do those things you mentioned? Where is a good source for colt parts? What manufacturer buffer and spring/color should I be looking at as well? I was looking at ordering from specialized armament... they have a full auto lpk that includes the fcg already. Do you know if all the parts in that kit are all colt parts, also would you recommend replacing the mag release as well? Thanks! |

View Quote SAW is a great source of Colt parts -- if they say everything is Colt, it is indeed Colt. Other good sources of genuine Colt FA parts are Brownell's, and Dennis Todd. (Brownell's inventory is spotty. but the cheapest if you have a C&R FFL; Dennis has all sorts of rare and out-of-production NIB parts if you need/want them.) Yeah, I would probably change out the mag release. As long as you are careful, there won't be any marks. As far as buffers / springs, go with whatever works with the configuration you plan on using it in. Over time, I've built up a reference collection of everything from 7" to 20", and if you want to use both shorty and rifle/LMG length uppers, I recommend the Vltor A5 system -- it's the only collapsible setup that will run reliably with my LMG. The A5 buffer tube is longer than the mil spec shorty, though, so if you want to go ultra-short, it may be too long. Hope that helps! |

[#26]
And one last note:
Remember that springs function like the motor oil in your vehicle: They prevent wear by providing a buffer between metal parts. This is particularly true for the hammer and trigger springs. So change them regularly -- they are cheap, and can prevent more expensive wear. How often? Depends on the configuration and caliber. Rifle configs in 5.56 probably can last at least 10k rounds before replacing them; 5.56 carbines down to 10-11" barrels, start thinking about it around 5-6k rounds. If you are shooting 7.62x39 or 9mm, or extreme 5.56 shorties, you might need to change 'em every 2-3k rounds. Watch the potential impact points on your hammer and disconnector -- if you start seeing that they are actually touching each other while cycling, the springs are no longer pulling their weight. And with all those steel parts riding within an alloy lower receiver, if they are hitting each other, the impact is transmitted through the hammer and trigger pins and into the receiver walls. And that is bad, bad juju. HTH! |
|
[#27]
Tony, thank you very much! You have given me so much information and more things to buy lol. No really thank you. As you recommended, I dont want to touch the factory staking on the receiver extension. I will just stick to the original buffer tube and use a non vltor a5 system. Lot's of advice and tips, they are very much appreciated. I am trying to gather as much info as I can to reduce unnecessary wear on the lower receiver.
As much as I want to spend on Geissele SSF, I am going to pass at this time. I have decided to get the FCG set and mag release assembly from SAW. Now I just have to figure out what buffer weights I need to get. Thanks again! |
