8 of them haven't been functioning well lately though.....
In all seriousness, it's interesting seeing the different serial numbers. My gun is in the same 9,000,000 serial number range as these scraps, and it's crazy to think that it's "life" journey has made it worth $25,000 instead of $15. These pieces range from 9275514 to 9542137. For those wondering, I bought these to make stuff out of for friends and family. |

FYI, I'm not a databank guru, and I'm mostly interested in the 9-million SN M16s, because almost all of them made it into the NFA Registry, and thus are transferable (though there are select examples of other SN ranges in the Registry). I'm primarily interested in tracking -- or eliminating -- the M16s that U.S. civilians can own. |

TF, that is VERY cool!
For anyone who buys any Apex crushed receivers: I am trying to build a complete registry of the 9-mil SN Colt M16A1s. Thanks to Osprey's link, I bought 8 today, which will be entered into the registry as gone.
The 9-mil SN guns were registered in ATF's NFA Registry and thus transferable, yet destined for LE and export sales. Many, many have been destroyed, either by in-the-US LE agencies or by importers bringing them back in as parts kits. PLEASE, PLEASE send me the SNs of any purchased destroyed receivers so that I can list them in the registry, to narrow down the number of intact, still-in-the-US transferables, as a reference source available for current and future owners of transferable Colt M16A1s. I wish I were rich enough to buy all of Apex's receivers to help complete my registry, but that is beyond my means. Thanks for your assistance. |

They were still making them in May 1986, so some are transferable and some are not. The highest-number transferable I have seen is 9607520. There may well be some transferable examples with higher SN's; of course, many of these were exported, and when they were re-imported the receivers were destroyed or else they became post-samples. So a low number is no guarantee of transferability. |

So FWIW, I received my eight Colt M16A1s from APEX today.
They were demilled by crushing, not cutting, so they are just bags of shattered aluminum. They did keep the left front receiver side plate intact, and all eight were pre-1986 SNs and would have been transferable had they not been exported to a foreign LE agency and then turned into post-samples by reimporting them (that's what happened, according to APEX). FWIW, though shattered, you can see that most were either very low mileage or even unfired, judging by my eight. APEX was not the importer; they bought the pieces from a third party. So they do not have a list of the SNs. If anyone else buys some, please pass along all SNs in the 9-million range. |

There are so many potentially transferable 9-mil SN series M16A1's out there, and so few that actually still exist as transferable today. It's probably silly to try to create a registry, but I do have SNs and details on over 1k of them now, and every entry makes the registry that much more accurate. As time goes by, it will grow, and this is what history is made of. Thank you for helping to define it. |
