THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
This looks like an A2 receiver with an A1 upper, but no A1 or A2 mark under the M16.

I thought A1 was slab side without reinforcement (?)

Also, why no A1 marking?

Reason I'm asking is that I mailed the check for this one yesterday.

Reinforcements refers to beefed up front hinge and rear receiver ring areas seen on most A2s

Magwell fences are another animal. Here's a thread illustrating partial vs full fences: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_23/314683_M16_vs_M16A1.html Almost all transferable M16s (604) are full fence, and not distinguishable from the longer production run 603s (M16A1). I have one of each, both 9 mil SN guns. I can't tell them apart except for the rollstamp. 603s are more numerous, if that matters.

Slabside refers to uppers lacking the forward assist.

Sounds like you bought a M16 rollmarked 604. Congrats!

That is a little on the high side, but not by much for the current market.

It does look nice, now you just have to wait a very long time to shoot it.

I did buy this from Frank, been looking for several months for a really clean M16 but have had no luck locally.

Once it arrives at my dealer, I'm sure we'll shoot it a few times before the paperwork is approved.

Not it is lack fence of around magazine button.

There were basically 3 different styles or models of the AR15/M16A1 lower. They included the "Slabside,"
"Partial Mag Fence," and "Full Mag Fence."

Thanks. I probably read OP wrong. He said he was buying a M16. My mind went to uppers b/c I did not think any M16 stamped receivers completely lacked fences. Or is this incorrect? Sam

"slick side" is the usual term for an upper without fwd assist. "slab side" generally refers to lowers with no fence or detent boss.

An AR-15 SP1 is the very epitome of slick and slab.

Funny, but I'd still like to know if there are any completely "fence-less" receivers stamped M16? I suspect not, but don't know for sure.

I suppose if you ground off the fence on a RR it would be..........."off-fence-ive"........
