New SOT status... trying to figure out what types of firearms out there that are pre May dealer samples... ones that don't require a PD love letter.

I've always thought it would be cool if an ex-SOT corporation held a bunch of pre-May samples.  A regular old civilian could buy the corp and end up with a bunch of pre-May samples without ever being in the business.

You can just get a FFL/SOT, buy a bunch of pre-mays and not renew it as you get to keep them after as a civilian. Most pre-mays are still very expensive and the selection as seen above is fairly limited.

Can you still keep them after giving up the SOT?

Know of any M16s or RRs for sale?

Law letters are a requirement of post samples and no you can't keep them when you give up your FFL like you would a pre-may. Otherwise that dealer wouldn't be selling them

We have 3 pre-May's here at the shop . They don't seem to sell as easily as the Transferables or post samples . We have an AUG , UZI and FAL . Dealers that want blasters get posties , and other folks buy trannies

Working with some folks who have a pre-sample TRW M14.

Still don't know where that one came from.

While this is the MG forum, don't forget other post-68 imported NFA.  I own a non-transferable factory 14" Benelli M1 SBS and have seen non-transferable Sig 552 SBRs, one RPG-7 DD, Milkor 40mm rotary DDs, HK69 40mm DDs, and a factory HK MP5SD suppressor.  I have not seen personally but have encountered ads for the occasional odd European muzzle can that someone probably imported for R&D purposes.

Returning to pre-86 DS MGs...

Schnellfeuer
Danish Madsen
Walther MPK
Sten
Steyr AUG
Bren
AK-47 and RPK
Grease Gun
Beretta SC70
Swedish K
Uzi and Mini Uzi
Star SMG
Sterling
Steyr MPI69
Colombian 22-2
M249 / MAG-58
1919 and M37
PPSh-41
MP18/i
MP28/ii (I turned down a stripped receiver at SAR 2006? $3k.  I regret that mistake.)
MP40
Czech Skorpion (two were displayed at SAR 2002)
Marlin UD-42
Beretta 93
Beretta M12

There's at least one presample factory Colt M16A2 out there.  I know because I missed it on GunBroker.

LOTS of US milsurp firearms were brought in after 1968.  Grease Guns, TSMG, Reising, UD-42, the BAR, 1919, even M16.

But despite my best efforts, I never found a M2HB or a M60 though.

Interesting that you mention the M1 Entry SBS. I own one also, although mine is transferable. My understanding is that they (imported post-68 non-MGs) can become transferable after sitting in LE hands for an arbitrary number of years. It seems to be at the discretion of the examiner. Has anyone seen this happen?

Curious (I am not a SOT), can you transfer a premay sample after giving up your SOT and keeping it as a civilian?

If if not how would inheritance work? Can you get premays into a trust?
Link Posted: 3/28/2017 10:10:17 AM EDT
[#16]
Yes they can be transferred, but only to current SOTs or government entities. Same for inheritance purposes. If your heir holds a FFL/SOT, they may inherit the item(s) and receive them as a transfer.

Thanks, so as I understand it the only real benefit is the ability to keep after giving up your SOT?

As compared to post-samples, yes. The only benefit when compared to transferable MGs is that pre-samples are generally less expensive.

That should only work for otherwise unimportable non-NFA long guns.  Once they're used, they can be sold as normal long guns.  Post-68 NFA is always post-68 NFA as per GCA '68.

It's my understanding that today Benelli brings in entry guns with a long barrel and cuts them here..?  Never got clarification on that.

My gun is an early gun- HK was the importer because Benelli didn't even have their own US importer yet.  There was an AZ dealer who bought around 50 from a PD.  ATF allowed transfers until someone caught that they were non-transferable.  All owners got a letter; they could keep them or ATF could reverse the transfer, but they'd have to follow post-68 rules for all subsequent transfers.  Any how, I got mine from another AZ dealer.  Best $250 I ever spent!

That's what I heard too, but I don't have it from any official source.

My gun is like yours physically. HK imported it. There aren't any restrictions on my paperwork. Maybe it was simply an error, but I've seen other M1's in the same situation, completely transferable.
