Archived Original thread

Built the axle out of spare donut tires, miata hubs n spindles turned on a lathe to fit inside the tube. Cut the ratcheting portion of a damaged tripod front leg and welded it all together. I did it this way so if I hated it, the tripod can be returned to original.

Next up is to make the faux armor shield.

A fellow in Tennessee that goes by the name shady grady on GunBroker has new in tube M61 barrels at $1200 each. Also, CDVS.US.com has M61 barrels in various grades. Another source for 20mm barrels is Pac-Nor Barreling in Oregon. They make 20mm barrel blanks up to 45" long; see their website for details (www.pac-nor.com).

Could you PM me the info on the guy who built your breech block?  I would love to get a 75mm or 105mm sliding breech block made for a bag gun.

Mocking up the faux armor with some cardboard

Forward of the axle looks better IMHO, but limits traverse of the action. Or I have to make the armor section thinner.

Forward of the axle

Aft of the axle

just my opinion but i would extend the armor over top of the wheels, its a very narrow wheel well so it looks funny and would offer very minimal protection in the current setup.

I was thinking about that and will mock it up.

It's aluminum plate, so it will provide minimal protection anyway :)

That looks a lot better. If you just want it for looks and to shield from the blast of the muzzle aluminum will work fine. If you want real ballistic protection there are a lot of companies that can make you custom AR500 steel panels which will get you lvl 3 rifle protection.

To give you more room in between the axle so you can make a larger shield?

Serendipity. While sorting through some stuff I got from my dad's after he died, a perfect length D-ring pin. It was already drilled at the perfect length and everything fit awesome.

Along with the three clamps, it would appear so. Safe enough for a field piece.

Previously it was just the 3 clamps. I planned to use a pin located in the gas port on the barrel, but then decided to use the nut instead. With just the three clamps, it held for about 50 rds, but then slid ever so slightly. This was probably due to me not torquing the clamps down enough after a change. Anyway, the nut will be more than enough.

It would likely be a different story with a static gun, but with the way you have things set up it's a total non-issue. Simple, clean, clever solution.

Static = no recoil system?

Between the recoil system and the muzzle brake, it's fairly soft shooting gun. Whole thing weighs 100lbs or so and jumps up off the ground pretty good ;)

Yes, exactly. With the setup you have, a simple nut like that butted against one of the clamps is sufficient to prevent sliding in the clamps themselves. You've got a nice, simple setup.
