Or would it be the first time a can came in with different serial number.

We no longer do it. I've had a couple of issues with it. The first being that any errors that cause the form 3 to get kicked back, can result in the form 4 also getting kicked back while you wait for the transferor to correct the form. That's happened once. We got a letter back that said the item wasn't in our inventory.
I also had another occasion where a distributor provided serial numbers off a form 3, but the ATF lost the form (or some other issue caused it to have to be resubmitted). For whatever reason, the distributor changed the serial numbers that we were getting, and didn't inform us. Again, we receive an error letter on a form 4 that says ser # 12345 wasn't in our inventory because the distributor had changed it.
The ATF will tell you not to do it, and that's generally the correct answer. Although, there are plenty of dealers who do it and generally the worst case scenario is the form gets sent back for correction to verify the serial number or silencer info.
