Have shot an AR converted to 9mm and there was still a lot of noise due to mechanics and stuff.
Been reading and some say suppressing a .223 isn't as impressive as a pistol caliber as it is still pretty loud.

What about a .223 bolt action. Just how quiet would that be? Would it be significantly more quiet than an AR?
I can't think of anything to say. Nada, zip, nothing.

Sounds like some one shooting a 22lr but beacuse it's the bullet crack you hear you have a hell of a time pin pointing where it came from. I noticed a diffrence out of the bolt gun verses my AR. YMMV

You will be very happy!

Suppressed Bolt gun vs AR is a huge differance.

hell, my suppressed 20" ar is quite a bit quieter than my suppressed 14.5" ar. when I turn off the gas system, it's even more quiet. You'll like it.

find someone with a suppressed ar and shoot it to get an idea of what you're getting in to.

I've run both suppressed ARs and suppressed bolt guns and the bolt gun is definitely more quiet.
It also cuts down on any gas in the shooters face.

I have a rem 700 in 223 that I had ADCO cut to 18" and thread. With a suppressor and homeload subsonic 223 it is nice and quiet and still some what accurate at 100 yards. I am very happy and impressed with it.

I shoot several cans in 223. One Remington 700 is threaded for 223 / YHM Phantom suppressor. At 100 yards I can hear the bullets impact on the berm. With an AR you can't. I also shoot the same can off my Thompson Contender handgun without hearing protection. It's real quiet, yet the noise is all in front of the gun because of the bullet going super-sonic.

I have a youtube short video of the handgun. You tell me if it's not quiet.

Search on my page as I have the Surefire FA556AR (full sized) 556 silencer from different angles on line too. You can hear the sound difference. For fun I'm shooting at the camera on 1 video so it's what an animal or a terrorist would hear. You hear a "spssss " sound then the boom unsurpressed or with the silencer you hear just the "spssss", the boom is gone. That's 130 yards away as the other spot I shoot was too active, so I went to the shorter range to film these videos. I think that sound could be the bullet breaking the sound barrier, but I'm not positive.

When shooting a suppressed rifle, the magic happens when you use subsonic ammo.

Yes, bolt is better than semi auto in regards to sound reduction and accuracy.

Thanks everyone for the replies. That was the easy question.
The hard question will be which can.
After some research I will probably be posting more "which can" type questions.

You need to pay attention to twist rate if you are going to shoot subsonics through a suppressor. The twist must be fast enough to stabilize the bullet so that you don't get a baffle strike.
