I am looking to send out my Ruger 22/45 barrel to get threaded for to fit a Gemtech Alpine on it and also wanted to get the barrel shortened. Can anyone help me with a size to get it cut down, not looking for a super shorty, but also don't want it to stay at its current length. Pics to go with your suggestions would be great, as well as any decent companies that will do the work.

Thanks in advance.

It is hard to tell you how much shorter to go without knowing your current barrel length.

but I have a 5 inch barrel on mine, it works fine. I wouldn't mine a 4.5inch barrel though, but 1/2 inch is not enough for me to worry with now.

here is mine with my SS Sparrow

I would go 4" since it handles nicely and should keep most bulk ammo subsonic.

Yep. 4.5" also keeps most bulk subsonic.

It may cheaper for you in the long run to just sell yours and buy a new threaded version though.

4.5" or shorter is the magic length to keep most hi velocity ammo subsonic through most 22 barrels pistol or SBR I have found over the many years of cutting them down for suppressor use.

Mine is 4.5 and Fed bulk, and CCI Mini Mags all stay subsonic. I can hear the difference between actual sub sonic rounds and Bulk rounds, but the sound is so slight that the cheaper stuff will do.

I agree with this statement on being able to hear a difference between sub sonic rounds and bulk rounds that are supposed to be high velocity.

I was told my gun is actually a 4.5" barrel and not a 5" barrel. I guess that is true if the 4.5" is the magic length to keep rounds subsonic.

you might look in to buying a tacsol upper for it depending on what your going to spend getting it threaded. As i typed that i remembered that ruger's uppers are the serialized part huh?

anyways my 5.5 inch will crack about 1in 100 shots with my sparrow.

Factory 4 1/2" with Sparrow. In over 1000 rds so far, I haven't had anything go supersonic.

It's been roughly 1/2 and 1/2 CCI mini mags and Fed Bulk.
