Following are pics of a solution to blow back from the suppressed AR-15 platform.  Not my idea, just something cool I thought I'd pass along.  I found pics on the net a while back but can't remember where.

3/32" drill bit and a steady hand.  It helps to have a table top vice & rubber covers to hold the charging handle while drilling.  Paperclip bent & in pics to illustrate the angle of attack. No need to paint, carbon will blacken it.

It doesn't stop all of the blow back, but reduced it greatly.  I don't come away with a red burning eye(s) after a shooting session anymore.

Note - if you shoot left handed the title should read "love getting gas in the face?"

This works well on my .223 & 9mm AR's.

Cool. Thanks! Sure saves money over that PRI handle.

ETA: Did it this morning. Looks good.

Exactly!  I was pretty excited to find the idea for this, but there weren't any pics of the final product... just MS paint images.  It took me all of 40 minutes or so to gather materials & drill 9 charging handles.

This was the guinea pig, which is why the holes are a little rough.

not a bad idea at all

Interesting idea. I like the ASA sidecharger though, solves the problem quite nicely.

Thank god I am not left handed!  Great idea, I might have to do this.  Surely beats spending 90 bucks for a stupid charging handle.

I don't get a lot more gas suppressed than I do without; I shoot a reflex style can. I get enough though that I think I'll give this a shot. This along with the RTV trick (which my lazy ass also hasn't gotten around to) ought to just about eliminate the gas. Thanks for the heads up.

I'll be trying the RTV trick in combination with this soon.  I'm hoping that the blowback pressure will be reduced enough that I won't need to ever... or rarely replace the RTV.

kewl,
can you do this to a BCM gun fighter charging handle?

So this actually works.

Hmmmm?

Any downsides except maybe weakening the metal, even though I doubt it would ever break due to this mod.

For $20 I guess who cares.

Did you try it with an AR10 CH?

I'll stick with the PRI Gasbuster...but I give ya points for creativity!

I know someone who has a BCM Gun Fighter.  He's interested in doing this mod, I'll post pictures if we do.  I haven't done an AR-10 CH .... yet

Note to add, in addition to making 9mm/.223 more fun, 22LR conversion is vastly improved also.  I use to get little particles in my eye from shooting the 60 grn Aguila SSS.  It still smells funny but I don't have to wear glasses or use clear eye to wash out the particles now.

Now you need to do a side by side comparison with a Gasbuster!

I was debating doing something similar to the CH on my upcoming SBR. Fortunately, someone beat me to it.

Let me know how that works out.

That, combined with the permitex job, would be pretty slick.  I think I'm going to try it.

Not wearing eye protection when shooting is not the smartest thing to do, buy hey, they are your eyes.

So how about a GasBuster + RTV trick + the drilled hole?

Safety glasses have made the gas a non-issue for me, as long as I stay away from bean burritos.

I would like to see one of these modified charging handles make it through a carbine course or match before I go drilling holes at the weak point.  I suspect this may break after doing many one sided pulls, but I have no data on that........

What does that hole do to the structural integrity of the charging handle?  I don't know about anyone else, but I put a lot of stress on the CH running it one handed, and it would be quite the disaster to have the handle snap off...

I use the RTV trick and have zero blowback, without drilling on anything.

I'd be interested to see how this design holds up over time and use.

I have 4 of the BCM GunFighter handles.  I am going to do this to ONE of them as a trial.  I will post pics in the next couple days......after I finish this run of night shifts.

Unless you get a stag lefty gun and drill the same way in to the left you're SOL on this type of fix.  There are springs/hardware on that side of the charging handle.  You may consider doing the RTV trick, though if it's a right handed gun you'll still get gas from the chamber.

Well it took me a couple weeks to get around to this, but its done.  I will be able to post a report on how well it works next week.
We are heading out for the next "jack rabbit killin' spree next Thursday."

If you're a lefty, just do the modification on the opposite side––the left.

And remember to warn any right-handed shooters about the gentle, smokey flavor they're going to experience shooting your AR getting a face full of gas....

A few years ago, someone posted pics of a mod similar to this idea but with the hole drilled at 90 degrees at the rear of the charging handle and continued thru the receiver. I found it most interesting as he or she had posted that they didn't have a suppressor (at least I don't think they did––I'm not sure)––and never tried it––but IN THEORY––it should work. And the usual legal disclaimers....at least I'm 90% sure it was on this board––it's the only board I visit anymore for suppressor info....

Or––get a piston gun, and stop worrying

If you drill a hole through the receiver on the left it would work, and drill a hole out the left of the charging handle further up the neck. However - you can't just do a mirror image hole.  There is a latch, spring and roll pin in the way.  I didn't mind drilling with so much meat, but doing a hole on the left side in the skinny wall of the neck.... I would think that's a bad idea.
