I am going to turn 21 next year in july so I was wondering whats a good pistol? I hear glocks are good, I dunno about 1911 but I wanted something I can keep at home for defense (I am not doing CHL... theres too many places you cant carry) and I dont want to spend too much money either, just in case some LEO's decides to take it away because its an "assault weapon"

Best home defense handgun for someone who doesn't shoot alot, and doesnt need a "flat" gun for concealment, might be a 4 inch 357 revolver.

"What's a good pistol?"

The one that gets you to a long gun.

FWIW - IMO DZ gave you some sound advice

I'm not a huge fan personally, (matter of feel and taste) but for your needs I would look into a Ruger auto.  Decide caliber and aluminum or plastic frame by what feels better.  They are strong, reasonably accurate, and inexpensive.  Check them out.

You can even look at purchasing from www.galleryofguns using their locator service.  They are a distributer and one of the largest distributers of Rugers. After you figure out what you want they will get prices for you from up to five shops in your area. Saves a lot of leg work.

Couldn't agree more. Look at a S&W 646(+) or a Ruger GP100. Both are great guns, but the grip and sights are different enough that if you like one, you probably won't like the other.

Listen to these words, they are spoken by a very very wise man.

I have to second the Beretta and revolver (try S&W and Taurus) recommendations.  I'd also add a CZ-75 or an IMI Baby Eagle.  They can be had for a decent price.  Try several and see what fits you well and what has good 'pointability' and balance.  Everyone's hands are different.  What may fit me like a glove may seem clunky to someone else.

Get a pistol and a shotgun because if you are looking for home defense, nothing beats a 12 gauge.
