I was blasting away at some poppers and steel plate racks with my G19 this week and had to hit them near the top to drop them reliably. I was using 124gr. Blazer Brass. I have some 125gr. Zero JHPs. Should I just load them up to 1200fps or get out the 1911?

Poppers weren't calibrated, should fall with 119g at normal power factor.

There's no calibration there. I was propping them with rocks.

I would try 147's or even the 165gr xtreme bullets to have more momentum to sweep the plates

Try Geco 124

Xtreme 124fp was my go-to bullet for handgun shoots. Never had a problem with steel...assuming I hit it!

230gr  3.8gr CLAYS

just kidding

the poppers and steel should have an adjustment bolt at the bottom, to adjust how far forward it hangs.

Calibrate them to fall with 9mm   ( before somebody with a 45ACP shows up to laugh at you )

That's why I always bring my .40 to 3 gun. If poppers aren't falling for those with 9, I switch over.

But if you're just shooting your own, adjustments have already been covered.

@bm3

What kind of muzzle velocity do you get from that?

Well unless it's competition who cares if it takes another shot? Maybe they have the plate rack set wrong or not level.

But 147s could help.

Those are about the velocities I get from the same load.

I'd usually cheat myself a bit for steel. I don't reload so making power factor is easy.

But if I knew steel was in the stage, I'd load some 9mm nato in the mags, opposed to lower powered bulk.

ETA: ppu (generic 115gr bulk) averages 1030 in my g19 barrel. Win 9mm nato (124gr) averages 1130. Recoil is pretty much the same, but it knocks steel with much more authority.
