I already have a pump combat shotgun, but I'd be very likely to go with the Vepr over the battle rifle. I know, I know, this is heresy, but I have my reasons:
If I'm going to get a big, heavy centerfire rifle, it will be a long-range rig or DMR. I don't see .308 offering any real benefits over 5.56 inside of 200yds. It gives up ammunition capacity, and cannot be fired as quickly. Neither the M1A or PTR are ideal as DMRs (I don't care about the EBR; it is a heavy pig that generally got left in the truck), and I'd rather maintain commonality with my 5.56 ARs, which throws .308 out of the running.
I already have multiple .30-30 leverguns for hunting, which is the other application for a battle rifle. Missouri doesn't have moose; .30-30 is plenty enough for deer and hogs. Shots beyond 200yds are rare in this part of the state anyways, and I don't have the skills/practice/money for long range hunting.
Shotguns are fun, and offer major bang for the buck, especially when tuned to run light birdshot loads. The Vepr would get used quite a bit, the battle rifle would not due to cost of ammunition. I don't need another rifle platform to train on anyways.
