Intended application: Do-everything rifle.  I want to be able to put a high magnification scope on it and blast targets at 800 yards, and also put a red dot on it and work quickly at close ranges. I want:
-Realistically good accuracy (specifically, as a measure of accuracy, 1.5 moa consistantly with factory ammunition).
-Absolute reliability
-Light weight
-Reasonable cost.
-Ease of mounting optics

So here's what I have going so far in my decision-making process: Each Rifle will get 8 points for the best, and down to 1 point for the worst at each category.  All "data" is just what i'm getting second hand off the interwebs, so feel free to correct me.

Accuracy: Tough to say, especially for broad categories like "m1a", "ar10" that cover multiple weapons with varying accuracy, but in general, the forums seem to show a group with outstanding accuracy and a group with slightly less. I'll just either award 8 or 4 points depending on which group it tends to fall into:

RFB: 4
SCAR: 8
AR-10: 8
FAL: 4
M1A: 4
HK91: 8
Saiga: 4
FNAR: 8

Reliability: (I know this will make a lot of people a lot of butthurt, but again, just what i'm reading on the web, so feel free to chime in- that's why i'm making the post)
RFB: 1
AR-10: 4
M1A: 2
Saiga: 3
FNAR: 5
HK91: 6
FAL: 7
SCAR: 8

Light weight (using standard models, listed weights).
RFB: 7 points (8.1 pounds)
AR-10 KAC SR-25 example): 5 points (9.0 pounds)
m1a: 3.5 points (9.1 pounds)
Saiga: 3.5 points (9.1 pounds)
FNAR: 2 points (10 pounds)
HK91: 1 point (10.9 pounds)
FAL: 6 points (8.6 pounds)
SCAR: 8 points (8.0 pounds)

Cost: again, depends on model, but this seems close.
RFB: 2 points (1929)
AR-10: 6 points (1619)
m1a: 4 points (1739)
Saiga: 8 points (800)
FNAR 5 points (1699)
HK91 (using PTR91) 7 points (900)
FAL: 3 points (1800)
SCAR: 1 point (2716)

ease of mounting optics:
All with a pic rail got 8
RFB: 8
AR-10: 8
M1a: 4
Saiga: 4
FNAR: 8
HK91: 6
FAL: 4
SCAR: 8
Link Posted: 9/30/2015 5:26:28 AM EDT
[#9]
SCAR: 1st place, 33 points
AR10 2nd place 31 points
HK91 3rd place 28 points
FNAR 3rd place 28 points
FAL 4th place 24 points
Saiga 5th place 22.5 points
RFB: 6th place 22 points
m1a 7th place 17.5 points

Looks like i'm gonna start saving for a SCAR 17.  Thoughts?

Well, according to one well respected member, the SCAR is already obsolete.
He reports that military units are dumping it.

Dumping the 17? I'll need to see some proof of that. I've been seeing them for 3 deployments now. Maybe the 16, I've never seen that one in the wild.

yeah i know socom pretty much dumped the scar16.  They realized that there's just really not that much (as in nothing) a SCAR 16 does that an m4 doesn't.  And the sopmod blcok ii m4's are just as capable as a SCAR 16.  However, they do continue to use the 17 with great success unless i'm greatly mistaken

The comments were made in an M1A related thread, so it was probably the 17/H...

I'll just not that I've seen people say there are a lot of versions of the AR-10 that are getting lighter than 9lbs.  I'm not sure of details though.

Let us know what you get. Range report.

FAL just for the pure awesomeness.  I will never, ever part with mine.  Other .308s will come and go, my FAL will always remain.

You forgot Parts Availability in your equation...how you gonna fix it if it breaks? How you gonna buy accessories if no one make them?

SR25 pattern or Armalite Pattern AR is what I vote...i fyou want something that is practical compared to your standards.

M1A, HK or FAL for a reliable "battle rifle" and nastalgia....

Any one of the others for "cool"

You can get an AR pattern gun for what? $1500 less than a SCAR? A SCAR isn't $1500 better and that leaves a lot of $$ for mags, optics and ammo.

Sounds logical to me.

I've only owned 1 AR10, an Armalite.
Are all AR10 parts & mags interchangeable?
I seem to recall that they are not.
What models accept P-mags?

My personal robust & reliable .308  "battle rifle" is the M14.
I like the nostalgia, and the ability to modernize the hell out of it.

That's a good point about the SCAR not being 1500 better than an ar10.  If you had to get an AR10 what model comes to mind?  I was looking at the smith and wesson m&p 10

My DPMS LRT-S.A.S.S shoots Hornady 168 bthp TAP less than 1".The 168 Amax TAP right at 1" and Nosler CC's 168 and 175's at 1" also. These are from the prone position with a bipod. They are 5rd groups only but are replicated every trip to the range. I know DPMS doesn't have the greatest name in firearms, but they make reliable accurate "SR-25" pattern .308's. The SASS model is a heavy bastard with the PRS stock, scope, bipod and a full mag(20 rds) though! I only wish it came with an adjustable gas block from the factory. Over 1.5K rds and had 1 mag related failure to feed. Just thought I'd throw it out there as another option.

Nice.. I own a m1a, FAL, and 2 ar patterned rifles. You can buy 3 ar type rifles for what you have in your m1a.

Tons of good choices. Some are more proprietary than others. S&w shot themselves in the foot with theirs due to lack of parts distribution and cs. You can read about that. I would personally look for a SR25/dpms patterned gun.

If only I liked the AR type rifle... the only one I own is a Daewoo AR 100.

Probably a high-end SR-25/DPMS pattern gun, followed by the SCAR. The vintage 7.62N rifles tend not to lend themselves especially well to long range precision for one reason or another.

Here is a good place to start. The Semi Auto precision rifle picture thread. Just look through the pics and get some ideas.

The AR-10"A" models accept the SR-25/ PMAG pattern magazines. Several parts are not interchangeable between the "A" and "B" variants. The upper and lower receivers, the magazine release, and  bolt stop release are not interchangeable IIRC. Check with ArmaLite to be sure.

I'm a FAL guy because i love them.

I'm relatively convinced i'd buy a DPMS g2 now if i was in the market for a 308 semi.

Good gun. I have a bunch of others, but shoot my AR10 and LMT MWS the most.
