Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06.  I think that's a Fajen stock.  I saw it at the local shop a couple years back--looked pretty ugly; patches of rust everywhere and a very poorly done varnish job.  Traded a field grade M1 for it.  The rust turned out to be just varnish; big handprints of it everywhere.  Refinished the stock, threw out the tasco that was on it and put on a Redfield 4x bearcub.

Remington 725 in .280 Remington with period correct Bausch & Lomb Balvar 5.  This rifle is now too rare for me to hunt with any more.  8.0 lbs complete with scope, mount, sling and a full magazine.  Bought new by a family member in 1959, inherited by me in 1976.  Hunted regularly until recently.

Don't have any group pics but it shoot about an inch and a half with factory 62 gr fusion. Less than that with 60gr VMax coyote handloads.

My early 60's Mark V .300 Weatherby Magnum with original period correct Weaver V12 4-12x50mm steel tube scope.  Light, elegant, flat shooting.  Great down range retained energy.  Recoil, especially with heavier 180+ grain bullets is . . .brisk, but manageable.  A firm grip on the forestock is needed to keep it from jumping out of your hand.  It will shoot one MOA three shot groups, then the groups open up due to heat in the pencil barrel, despite being freefloated.  In a hunting rifle that does not matter.   First shot from a cold barrel is very consistent.

This early Mark V action and barrel were made by J P Sauer in West Germany, the company presently called Sig-Sauer, as subcontractor to Weatherby.  Weatherby was the first US company to offer hammer forged barrels in America on the Mark V.

The Weatherby Mark V surely has a certain allure to it! I'd love to have one in one of the better balanced Wby mag cartridges. I think the .300 is one of them. Have you taken any game with it?

I have had my GSR for a while and suppressed it and got serious about shooting it and getting ready for deer season.  I was really surprised by the accuracy, would have been better but I am not a very steady shooter.

I have a Nikon 3-9x40 on it with a YHM Phantom Ti 762 QD suppressor on it with the YHM Phantom FH QD muzzle device.

I was shooting at 100 meters and 200 meters.  I spent most of the time at 100 meters as shots longer than that where I hunt are not common.  It did fine at 200 meters, but I need to put more practice with it at that range.  Below are my targets and I was shooting Remington factory ammo 150gr SP CoreLokts.  I plan to do some custom loads at some point, if I ever quit going to the range and build my bench!

This was an eight shot group, the one way out there was totally me messing up and pulling it, the one is a flyer, the others are a six-shot group.  Like I said, I am not steady, so I think this could have been better.  Was using just factory Remington CoreLokt ammo.

This is the grouping size with the flyer.

Sadly, in Mississippi, we don't have enough open country shooting to really take advantage of its long range capabilities.  I did take a nice 8 point at about 225 yards with it a few years ago, but the light 150 grain bullet I was using did too much damage.  Dropped in its tracks, though.  I mostly shoot non-magnum rifles for whitetail.  I plan to take it out West next year for elk along with my Mountain Rifle.  I'm working up a heavier Barnes TSX load for that.

They are new to me but folks seem to like them, and it installed well. I have mounted around 20 scopes at this point and have a feel for it. Was leery about no lapping and no locktite, but honestly, it sure went together nice.

My savage and my brother in law with his m1 carbine last week.

11.5lbs only got heavy once while I was scaling a really steep hill for  a couple hours. Some of the knarliest terrain Ive crawled up. My brother in law said I went up the wrong way

I had never shot this stick past 100 yards (the above group was 5 rounds at 100) untill the last day of my trip last week. At 200 paces, from a tight sling laying prone My 165 grain gameking hit exatly 2moa low. Perfect. my second was the same 2moa low but 3moa right. Shot number 3 was 2moa low but 4moa right. I was shooting at a boulder but had a definite aiming point.

I blame the jagged rocks I was laying on, the 20 degree temp forcing me into a bunch of layers, and my winter gloves. yea, thats it. I should have quit after the first shot.

GSR .308 with Leupold VX-R and Leupold rings drew blood in it's first season.  I'm by no means a great shot but this rifle made it easy at 100 yards, hit him right behind the shoulder, he ran for about 20 yards and that was it.  Shot him with Winchester Super-X 180gr soft point.

That thing is gorgeous.  Looks like he had some work done to it also.  Possibly?  I'm assuming that flat spot on the barrel is where the open sights were.  And then it looks like in that second pic it was tapped for a forward scope mount.  Since scopes were probably long back then......

I suspect so, yes. No idea what type of scope it was, as it has been off the rifle for awhile. The Hawkins recoil pad was added, as well, the Model 54s came standard with a buttplate. The Lyman 48 rear sight was optional with these (they were factory-drilled for it) and I suspect it has always been on the rifle.

This year's hunting rifle is a Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55.  This is my first year with this rifle and this cartridge, and so far both receive high marks.  I really like the 6.5x55 for deer.  I had planned to start reloading for this cartridge in the spring, but life happened.

Considering the cost of most factory hunting loads in this caliber, I was considering keeping it in the safe for another year.  However in the now archived 6.5 thread, another poster recommended the Prvi Partisan soft points.  Very reasonably priced, so I was able to put multiple boxes down range to confirm this rifle shoots them well and to give myself some practice.

Performance on deer has been quite good, with 2 deer taken so far this season, both double lung chest hits and DRT.

I wonder when they discontinued the .30 Govt '06 marking. The early Model 70s look a lot like the later Model 54s - the safety was the only real big change at that point, and a fair number of 54s that got sent in for service after '36 wound up with Model 70-style bolts.
