I'm lookin at the dpms GII recon. Looks awesome and I found a brand new one for $1000.  They come with a 16" bbl though..I wish it was 20 or atleast 18"

Is 16" enough barrel though for the .308? I don't own any .308 guns.  This will be used for deer hunting and target shooting at 400+ yards

I'm building a 14.x" and my buddy just received his stamp for a 12.5" mega .308 so...

ETA: neither of which will be used to humanely take game, ever, let alone 400yds FWIW

"400+ yards" is very vague. 16" is absolutely enough for 400 yards. But 1000 yards is also 400+ and a 16" will be running out of steam way out there. I think sub-600 yards a 16" .308 is plenty capable. Just get good at reading wind.

If it's not at least marginal from a 16" barrel it's not adequate from any length, WRT terminal ballistics.

use a good match barrel for your build and i bet you could get out to 1000 yards with a 16 inch barrel. i have been researching the same as i am building a 308 AR right now based on a aero preceison lower/upper.  i woudlnt try to humanely take game at that range, but you could punch paper with it for sure.  (FWIW, i wouldnt try to humanely take game at 1000 with an 18 inch AR either).  from what i have found, you lose 25 FPS per inch.  so 50 FPS difference in a 16" vs 18" and 100 FPS in a 16" vs 20".

I wouldn't be shooting at deer past 200yards. I'm not that confident of a hunter

Is the GII recon a good rifle? I'm hesitant to dump 1k on a dpms I don't know mch about them.

Can I put my geissle ssa trigger in it or are there .308 specific geisslle triggers?

What worries me bout ar10's is a lot of proprietary shit on them...

Wow, thats a great deal for a G2 Recon, where did you find it for that?

A 16" barrel is plenty for the distances you specified. For hunting, I would recommend the Federal Fusion MSR 150g load, they designed it for shorter barrels they advertise it at 2770 fps out of a 16" barrel.

EDIT:  I have a G2 Hunter and like it enough im looking for a RECON, I would recommend the G2 line.

Would the standard ar15 geiselle ssa drop right in?

Proprietary magazines? Does that mean no magpul?

16" is plenty for anything less than 800 yards.  I take my 14.5" out to 600 yards and can hit an 8 inch plate all day.

I'm pretty sure they still use SR25 pattern mags.

$1000 is a damn good price.

This should give you an idea on the difference on barrel length ballistics. Your not losing that much. Are you sure thats a gen II for $1000? Gen I's run this much but II's are around $1500. Grab it if that deal is true.

Nope, standard magpuls work great.  I think the recon even comes with a pmag.

I was able to hit 800m on the KD range with my armalite 16inch, free floated, sandbags and glass.

The stock trigger is ok at best but I have been spoiled by me geissle ssa.

Over all the gun seems awesome. Can't wait to shoot it.  The free float pic rail cheese grater needs to go though

You will be lucky to make a kill shot passed 200 with a DPMS gun.

Is there a reason why you say that? I hit all kinds of stuff at that distance. Perhaps its defective?

For sure. There's much better shit out there, but I don't know how the slew of 18-24" DPMS guns wouldn't hit shit way out past 600 yards.

Yeah  LS1 I would say 200 Yards is more than fine for you. People are always like... Well if I cant do it, it just cant be done. I have lived it, and seen that. Thanks for the great laugh you gave me. People are the best!

Well depending on what you are shooting those could all very well be misses or at least not kill shots. Looks like your group is 2.5-3 inches from the bullseye

Your gonna hit transonic at around 800 yds, and your gonna need to push the heavier projectiles too, 175 gr. SMK, or 178 gr. Amax.  16" will be just fine to 600, it's starts getting sketchy after that, I'm running a 16" Armalite.  If your interested I have some muzzle velocities from mine around here somewhere, you could plug them into JBM and see for yourself.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was going for. And the wood stock has an aluminum bedding block so it's the perfect matching rifle for my 16" AICS
