Just for the sake of discussion, if 5.56 ammo of all types were to be banned, would anyone here bother keep all/some/one of their 5.56 rifles, or would it be a race to the bottom to sell them off in favor of something not chambered in a caliber that also comes in a pistol version? Would someone invent a new caliber AR, and then hope that no one makes a pistol version? Would we all cling to our newly worthless paperweights and our supplies of 5.56 like fire extinguishers, or would we keep them in hopes that some future political overlord would save us? Anyone thinking of selling preemptively to avoid the devaluation of your collection?

Nope. Reloading for the win.
What calibers don't come in a pistol? |

[#3]
If that were to happen then we've got some mighty big problems. Might want to clean, lube and have them ready and waiting.
And IBTL. |

855 doesn't shoot very well, and is considerably more expensive than rounds I can load myself which DO shoot well. paired up with that, they actually work well on game, so not only do range days yield more fun because more targets get hit, but if needed one could subsist on the same ammo.
pretty sure i couldn't give two shits about whether 855 goes away. won't change what i do or don't shoot. *shrug* |

Not a problem. I'll take up knitting or something equally exciting.

That's what I was getting at. If they manage to knock off m855, why would they stop there? If they can say M855 is AP because it can be fired from a pistol and it can penetrate body armor, why would they stop there? Basically any 5.56 ammo can be fired from a pistol and can penetrate body armor, therefore if m855 is banned, it stands to reason that all 5.56 ammo will be banned, and then what? Will we keep them, sell them? If we sold them, who in the hell would buy them? |

That would basically red light them to ban ALL rifle ammo..............and would finally convince many hunters who don't like black rifles to get off their duffs and join us...........

If it comes to that, it may be high time to fire our representatives and elect some new ones, who actually represent us. How easy or hard is up to them. If it DID somehow happen, without massive public outcry, I'd probably re-barrel most of mine to 6.5 or 6.8. View Quote Once again though, there are already "handguns" (really just AR15 pattern rifles with short barrels and no stocks) that fire 6.5 and 6.8, and both of those rounds are more than capable of penetrating body armor when fired from those handguns, so it'd just be a matter of time (probably not too much time) before they got around to banning your 6.5 and your 6.8. Because the AR pattern rifle is so easily transformed into any barrel length, and just as easily converted to any caliber, opponents can argue that just about any caliber of rifle ammunition is potentially armor piercing, and ban accordingly. I'd love to just throw up my hands and say,"Aw shucks, no more M855, oh well", but m855 is just the beginning. If they get that foothold, there's no reason to think they'll stop. |

I agree. I don't shoot much M855. But that doesn't mean I'm not super pissed about this whole deal. It's BS and yeah, what precedent did it just set? Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't there a ban on chicom stuff coming into the country? So.. AK's and cheap 7.62 ammo was first and now this and we shouldn't be concerned?

I apologize if I said something wrong. It's just what I've been thinking lately and I think there is some truth in it. Now, if you're referring to the fact that everyone is talking about it and it's getting annoying, I understand, but everyone is talking about it, because it's an issue that affects us.
No, it doesn't help to dwell on the negative. But if there is something we can do, like become motivated to call our reps and such, maybe it would do some good. I don't know. But throwing up your hands and saying I don't shoot that ammo so I don't care doesn't seem quite right either. Although admittedly, I get kind of apathetic about politics a lot. If you think about what's going on too much, you go crazy. |

This is just one of many steps our Marxist president has taken to shred the Constitution. The really sad part is that the Republican party is too cowardly to do anything about any of this, whether it has to do with banning ammunition; rewarding illegal aliens; empowering Islamic fascism; or persecuting Christians, Conservatives, and other freedom loving Americans.

Pretty sure Ferret was just implying that it won't affect the way he shoots, or what he shoots, not that he condones any ammo ban.

With the amount of .223/5.56 ammo I have in inventory, there is no need for me to sell off any of my 30 ARs. For those that are anticipating the demise of .223/5.56 ammo, I recommend buying a bunch of it now regardless of the prices and keep your treasured AR(s). Better to have than have not. Better to address the situation as it is now than to be a victim of what may, or may not, happen later. I believe in always having a contingency plan in the event of things going sour or not.

You start a sh**storm of controversy and the less intelligent guys read it and then they spread it around and the next thing you know, it is widespread with no truth in it whatsoever. Just remember, if you talk about something long enough, someone will usually do something about it. Take the SIG Brace issue for instance. As Ameshawki said, shut up. |

I'm lost. Are you and ameshawki worried about another ammo panic buying spree because of people talking about this? If so, yeah, that makes sense. I'm still pissed though.
Plus you said there is no truth in it. Where is there NOT truth in the fact that they are banning certain types of ammo? Now, as far as the original premise or post in this thread, yeah, I see no reason to sell off AR's at all. I was kind of going off topic I guess. |

View Quote You did not read and understand what I was saying. I was referring to the idiots out there that are spreading a bunch of rumors and speculations without any truth to what they are saying. When you spread rumors and speculations, they are not truthful. The truth is this, the ATF is PROPOSING a ban on M855/SS109 ammo by re-categorizing it as "armor piercing" ammo. That is it. Nothing more. There is no talk about banning .223/5.56 ammo altogether. It is also highly probable that many have gone into panic mode and buying any .223/5.56 ammo they can get their hands on. Because of the rumors and speculations flying around, it may have some new AR owner considering selling their ARs because they may not be any ammo for it in the future. This is what happens when people start spreading untruths and other uninformed people read it and believe it as gospel. This latest panic was not caused by the ATF or the ammo industry, it was caused by a bunch of guys on the internet developing their own speculations and then spreading fictitious rumors. My advice to everyone, keep your AR. .223/5.56 ammo will be around for a long time and I have a feeling that the M855/SS109 is not going anywhere. Stand by for a return to reasonable pricing on .223/5.56 ammo. BTW, I could care less about another ammo panic. I started stocking ammo over ten years ago. I do not spread any words of panic. I try to explain to people the truth of what is going on. There is nothing definitive at this time and I do not believe there will end up being a ban on the M855/SS109. The ATF has no lawful basis of which to make the decision to make the M855/SS109 "armor piercing" ammo. By the definition in the law, it does not qualify. |

Roger.
I wasn't sure what the whole deal was with M855 to be honest. But it's irritating that it's even under scrutiny to ban. But I get ya. Yeah, no reason to panic for sure. And I'm with you. I have about as much 5.56 as I need right now. It would be nice to have more.... |

Holy fuck.
AP rifle ammo has been banned or civilian sale for decades! M855 was exempt, and the ATF pulled the exemption. Way to take one thing out of context, and make an entire panic out of it........ You must be an Alex Jones listener.... |

Regardless, leftist nanny state regulators WILL try to impact ammunition supply for the most popular rifle in America, and they will not stop with M855. We need to be vigilant and now.
Besides, once fired Lake City 5.56 cases are extremely good for reloading. I want the ammo to stay cheap and plentiful. Both M855 and M193 have been excellent cheap plinking ammo that gets turned into really good handloads after the plinking is done.. We need to keep it that way. |

5.56 rifle sell off? No. A greater concern is those that say they don't care about the possibility of a once legal ammunition being banned... whether you use it or not. Not referring to just the comment in this thread. Many have said the same thing. Anyone that says they don't give a shit about the proposed 855 ban should maybe sell all their guns. They are part of the problem. Everyone should give a shit when the BATF illegally strips you of a right.
