I've been trying to build up my AR500 collection and came across this guy on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/usr/steel.products?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

I was thinking of possibly getting a few plates from him but I've also heard the horror stories of easily ventilated "AR500" steel from Ebay so I just wanted to check and see if any of you guys have happened to deal with this particular seller.

Using the prices as a gauge, seems legit... BUT I personally don't like the tags for bolts... I like the holes in the body of the target.  Have you considered JC STEEL for your target needs?

You can get 3 of the 66% IPSC targets for $219... I have 6 of them and they are GREAT.

I am with you on the tags.
The reason I was thinking of going with this guy is I could get a 10" a 8" and a 6" round all 1/2" thick for around $75 shipped. From what I have seen on most other sites thats about the price of 3/8 thickness without shipping but I also know that a lot of times you get what you pay for.

I've pounded the piss out of my targets (even as close as 25 yards) with .223, .308, .300 H&H with no problems... 3/8th has served me well.  Minimal dimples...

I ended up just getting an IPSC 2/3 TARGET 1/2" X 12" X 20" for $80 shipped so I guess I will see how it holds up and go from there.

Well I have always been the type to over do it so I decided to stick to that even with something as simple as my first AR500 plate (I have AR reactive targets) with what I call project AR500 over build.

1/2" X 12" X 20 AR500 target.
3/4" dia grade 100 chain. (Not the usual grade 70)
1/2" dia  grade 9 bolts. (No the usual grade 8)
Way too many layers of way nicer paint then you would ever need to put on something you're going to shoot.

Yet to come up with a decently portable stand that will be acceptable but figuring that out is the next step.

I used this... you can make a smaller one that can be taken apart and put back together in no time...

I really like the stand but do you think a smaller version of it would be heavy/sturdy enough to withstand hits from a big bore rifle without falling over or taking damage from splatter?

I am thinking of actually going super simple and just buying two fence post putting long hook bolts at the top and beating them in and out the ground when needed.

So long as you don't get the plate swinging too much...  I've had both those plates swinging wildly... and the stand tips but does not go over.

ETA- junk swing set frames work great... I've obtained three for free... easy to move even with plates attached.

Just use rebar and some steel tubing welded together at angles, like this:

Everything else is great until it gets shot.  When these get shot, it is about a 2.00 fix.

Oh I hear ya and I have even thought about just using two shepard hooks but I still think two metal fence post with hooks rigged up on them would still be cheap and probably hold up/take a hit better.

Well I took it out to the range finally and told everyone there to unload on it until it falls.

It got hit with
556 green tip
7.62x39 124gr and 154grSP
7.62x54r silver tip
6.5x55 swed
Probably a few other rounds as well and it held up to it pretty well.

What was a little shocking to me was that the green tip and silver tip did little to no damage at all yet the SP and HP 6.5 put some small pits in the plate.

Speed kills steel.  I'd NEVER intentionally shoot M855 at my steel...

I didn't do it intentionally one of the guys at the range did it in what I think was an attempt to be cute and test my steel. Either way I don't really care and probably would have let him do it anyway I just would have liked to have been able to check it after the first few shots.
Anyway it doesn't really matter as both it and the mild steel core 7.62x54r did less to the plate then SP/HP 6.5x55 did.

According to this test the green tip is not really what you have to worry about since as you said speed kills steel and the M855 is slower than XM93.

As mentioned earlier. speed is what kills steel targets. I can shoot my AR500 at 100 yards with my 308 loaded to about 2700fps and all it does is knock the paint off. This weekend I painted a small red circle in the middle of one of my 1/2" AR500 targets and shot it with my 22-250 at 100 yards. I was using Hornady Zmax loaded to around 3800-3900FPS and it left a perfect dimple with it raised just a little in the center. It wasn't a dent, just a dimple. I'll be able to grind it smooth but I was just curious as to what my 22-250 would do to my AR500 at that close of range.
Don't ask me what it does to soft steel at the same range.................................. you need safety glasses, leather clothing and no bystanders anywhere close!!!!
