I'm trying to think of a single striker fired assault rifle, none come to mind.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because there's no real technical benefit. I think (but I am not an engineer) that for select fire you need many of the same parts anyway (sear, disconnector) so the only thing you really "lose" going select-striker-fire is the hammer. Completely different use case than for a bolt action.
I'd also guess that a hammer is cheaper to manufacture and easier to service, long term.

VZ58 uses a "linear hammer".

Strikers are used usually when space is at a premium, as in a pistol. There is plenty of space in a rifle action (mainly due to bolt and carrier mass requirements) so there really is no advantage to the striker system.
A lot of open bolt belt feds use striker systems for conversions into semiautos as space is indeed at a premium. That being said, striker systems in these type of weapons are a bit more complicated - the hammer is a better solution in general if you can fit it into a longarm. Strikers usually lead to heavier triggers. The Uzi is the only production semiauto longarm that uses a striker system. Once again, space is a bit at a premium in the uzi due to the overhung bolt configuration and central grip and magazine location. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
