Daewoo k2 - Page 1

Just picked up this k2. Don't know much about it other than it's piston and somewhat colt made by daewoo. Anyone know how these compare to modern ARs? Feels nice well built.

It actually doesn't! I found my finger to be safety enough :-) and I never walk around with one in chamber unless it's party time

Well made rifles, but the down side is that there are little to no spare parts available and ones that are are smith made and expensive. The ones I had in the past both K1 K1A1 and the Max's (same guns) were very accurate shooters. Scope mounts are weird and hard to find as well. The flash hider is not correct on your gun, should have a closed bottom Colt type. These are sort of a cross between a M16 and an AK47 in design.

Yes, it appears to have been cut down and inch or so and an xm/car15 type suppressor put on, dealer said some Korean units sported that look so I guess if was made to look like that

I bought a post ban thumbhole during the ban years. Love it.

As for accuracy, mine is about 1.5 MOA.

However, as you shoot it would begin to vertically string the rounds as the temps changed on the piston.

Daewoo made M16s for ROK under license from Colt's. They later used that knowledge to gin up an indigenous design based off their experiences building the M16s under license. It's the bastard love child of an M16/AK/FAL three-way.

Nice rifles, though model specific parts can be hard to get here; they can often be made by modifying AR-15 parts.

I wonder if Lionheart Industries will start importing parts from Korea. They did say they wanted to bring production to the US and produce a updated K2.

I read on one of the forums a company was importing them in the US again but to L.E. only.

Nice gun! They were known by various names in the US, depending on who imported them: K1/K2, MAX-1/MAX-2, AR-100/AR-100C. I still have my pre-ban AR-100C. It was interesting that the rifle version, as you have, and the short version with the collapsible wire stock used different gas system. The short version had a DI system like an AR, while the rifle version has a long stroke piston system like an AK. The rifle version also has a 4 position adjustable gas regulator.

For the flash hider, they may not have cut down the barrel. Bushmaster sold a XM177 looking flash hider that was threaded just behind the slots and most of the hider slipped over the barrel so you could have the shorty look without having to cut the barrel and worry about going SBR or pinning the hider.

Range report:

It went head to head with my colt 6520 and 6920. It held it's own and in some cases blew them away! Fired 100 rounds and grouping was about 1.25 at 100 yards. And I was using cheap wolf ammo as well as Winchester 556. It was a bit heavier about a few ounces but sites were easy to use and no failure to feed issues. The colts as usual had a few but not many.

After firing opened up bolt and it was clean and relatively cool to the touch. I think I found a new favorite.

Excellent rifle!

I have the AR100 marked K2. It's accurate & reliable.
The guys at Accurate Ordnance replaced the original
flash hider with a suppressor ready Smith DC Vortex.

Wrong those are pics of the k1a1 variant which is not the same. Has a
Short barrel hence the car like flash suppressor and is direct gas
Impingement.

My K2 has a 1:12 twist. They changed over to 1:7 twist later in production, but I think most of the ones imported here were 1:12. This is something worth checking if you're thinking of buying.

This is a really well-made gun. Neat side-folding stock, piston system, FAL-style cleaning kit in the grip. Takes standard M16 magazines.

When I was stationed in Korea we trained with the ROKAF version of Security Forces and their Special Forces. For some exercises we traded weapons and I kind of liked the K2. It seemed like it would be a little easier to maintain. But it did seem kind of clunky at times. The one K2 variant we all thought was cool was a surpressed 9mm carbine. It looked like it fed from the same mags the Colt SMG. We asked the SF soldier through a translator what he'd use it for and he said, "Sentries."

I nearly bought one of those D-200's years ago when Kimber was importing them, but when I went to look for them they had all dried up.

Part of the reason Daewoo came up with their own designs was that they were ticked off that Colt and the US State Department wouldn't let them export Daewoo-built M16A1. They had already been turned down on multiple occasions and caught when they they tried to export rifles and parts anyway.
