It is a Marlin X7 with a heavier contour barrel, detachable box magazine and stylized receiver. They are not bad for a cheap bolt gun, but they're a bit heavier than others in the class and I find the flat bolt knob to be a distraction. Due to its lighter barrel contour and blind magazine, the Marlin X7 is handier and feels livelier in the hands.
If you want a good, cheap, entry level bolt gun with a detachable box magazine the Ruger American is smoother and lighter. |

I have one in 7mm Rem Mag and really like it. I think anything Remington these days just brings out the hate.
Yes, the barrel is heavier contour, but that can help accuracy. It's still not a bull barrel by any means. The one advantage the 783 has over Savage and Ruger are Magnum chamberings with 24" barrels. For the price there's not really anything heads and shoulders better, and that includes the Ruger American. |

Here is a mini review I did on my Remington 783 in .308 that I picked up from Walmart for $290. It does what I want so I am happy.

Yeah I really don't need it to do anything special, just hit the deer so it's dead.
I have a 700 I'll be getting for actual precision work. |

I have one in 30-06 and it will shoot small holes with handloads
