Will by 5.56 brass work in this thing?  What, incidentally, is the difference between 223 and 5.56 brass?

For reloading? If so, yes. Brass is dimensionally the same. I would not recommend firing 5.56 ammo in a 223 chambered rifle, unless manufacturer says its safe.
