I'm moving to a state next year that is much more open to second amendment rights (I'm currently in a northeast state where the Constitution is only for the privileged elite).  After I relocate, I would like to build my first AR-15.  That said, I'm concerned I now may be running against the clock.

Money will be a little tight at first, and I'm in no personal hurry to get the entire thing assembled.  But things may change next year between the time I start building and the time I'm finished.  So my question is this:

What components should I buy right up front that have the most likelihood of being banned after the crazies start cramming through legislation?  I figure I'll buy those first so that I have them on hand and finish with legal parts after (or IF) any new law gets passed.

Thanks for the help.

While I don't condone contributing to the attention of this supposed "ban" I suppose the obvious answer would be stripped lowers and 30rd mags

Not going to matter.

Next "ban" is going to be possession (if they were ever to get it passed).

"turn them in folks....."

What I'd like to see is some 5'6" Italian UN "peacekeeper" with the little blue helmet go around door to door here trying to enforce this supposed UN treaty.

Theoretically, the next ban would be ownership - no grandfather clause.
Much more likely scenario would be EPA regulations, bans on shooting on BLM land, noise ordinances, etc

Why?
I thought firearms were just banned, hence receiver.
Not parts as well.

No mystery, bradpierson26.  I joined specifically to ask that question, and to help me better understand the AR-15.

I came to New Jersey from Michigan years ago, where gun laws at the time were a bit more reasonable.  In New Jersey, I found them so restrictive that I didn't even apply for an FID card, and left my deer rifles at home up north.  Now that I'm moving to North Carolina, I feel a veil has been lifted from me, and I want to bring my deer rifles down from Michigan, get my wife a CCW permit (and me too), and have some fun with some things like building an AR-15.

I am a member of the NRA.

Just wanted to clarify all of that, though I'm wondering why my post was sent to "General Firearms Discussion" when the topic concerns only the AR-15...

Because it was not "technical" to the AR. The AR thread is a technical discussion......like which is better; 1/9 1/8 1/7?

No biggie though. If you had really P-O'd the mods off, they would have just deleted the thread.

I know some believe their Second Amendment right will never be taken away from them. The fact that Obama said he wants to banned ARs once again comes as no surprise. They have been working on getting a bill passed that will banned ARs for years. I believe there getting more movement on getting a bill passed. The UN Agenda 21 wants the world to have no weapons just them and their army. I know a lot of people believe the NRA will no allow this to happen but this is much bigger them the NRA. They will Banned guns and it is not too far in the future.

Hello Mr. Judson.

I'm agent Tramplerights, and this is my partner Agent Shootyourdog. We have evidence that you filled out a form  4473 for one Bushmaster Automatic baby killing shoot through schools assault rifle. We also pulled your credit card history and discovered a few purchases at Cheaper Than Uranium, using information provided in compliance with federal law by the retailer we know you purchased 10 military grade hi-capacity theater sweeping magazines, and 5,000 rounds of military grade ammunition. Further more your neighbors informed us that they've seen you carrying suspicious cases in and out of your home in the past.

We are here to collect these items, if you do not comply we will put you on the ground, cuff you, plant kiddie porn on  your home computer, use metal detectors on your walls and rip out the water pipes one by one until  we find the hidden cache, and maybe kill your wife & children as they flee your compound.

You have 5 seconds to tell us where  these items are.

P.S. Don't get any funny ideas SCUMBAG. We brought Lon "deadeye" Horiuchi  along with us for this operation.

when they ban them, it will be a turn them in ban, not a, its okay to keep what you got ban.    so either get ready to give up what you just bought, or kill for it.

Nope.

Jeez, the skeptism here...

I figured a forum called AR-15 would be the perfect place to ask a question about building an AR-15.

Guys, I'm not FBI/CIA/ATF/CTD/ABC/CBS/NBC/AARP/WHATEVER.

I'm a guy who wants to get into the hobby and is concerned what changes we might face (and they are very real and disconcerting) after this past election.

Maybe I came to the wrong forum...

Don’t let some of them get to you. I would most likely restart your thread without using the word (banned) in the AR section and this time it should not be moved. Some people do not believe that the banned is coming even though it is. This way you can get your questions responded correctly.

Anyone that thinks that the Socialists are not in the process of instituting some type of "gun control" is dreaming.  I'm not sure exactly WHAT and HOW they are attempting to do but be assured that the same statists now in charge, who are jacking around health care, raising you taxes and telling you you can't buy a Big Gulp, will do anything and everything in their power to limit your right to bear arms, on whatever level they can.  THAT IS THEIR JOB.  They wake up every morning figuring out how to do it - that is - how to GET GUNS OUT OF THE HANDS OF CIVILIANS.

Anyone here who believes that NOTHING will happen is mistaken.  I'm sure there are countless things they can do to impede importations which alone would fuck up the firearms market and drive prices up.

What to buy?  Whatever the fuck you can, to include not just a $35 NRA membership but as much as you can send to them.  I would buy on the assumption that it just might be the last firearm you will ever be able to own.  Envision the worst case, say three years down the line with a Statist/Socialist majority in the Supreme Court and say some crazy gets his AR into another movie theater or school and takes out 20 kids.

(OP - disregard the douchebag responses completely.  This IS a great website, it's also my HOBBY and I can bet you I've sent more to the NRA in one month than some of these jokers have in their whole life but since it's the web you have to ignore them.)

Did you want someone to bake you cookies and throw a house warming party?
10 minutes of research could have found you numerous identical threads about a hypothetical new AWB.

Full frontal gun control is political suicide for dems just like abortion is political suicide for the GOP.
Like I said, gun control be back door through secondary regulations.

The easy answer is complete rifles, stripped lowers, ammo, components, and magazines (especially hi cap),

Seriously

Build one AR, buy some lowers, ammo and mags

Next step get a reloader, bullets, powder, brass and primers and learn to reload.

Next buy the cool guy rifle you want(Barrett 50 BMG, SR-25, SCAR etc).

Good luck and don't worry about stuff that hasn't happen yet.

If a ban does ever see the light of day all of this wont matter anyway.

Slightly off topic, if someone were looking to buy a half dozen AR's to stow in a closet for 5-10 yrs and hopefully make money on, which brand and model would you buy? Taking into account which brands of rifles have historically appreciated well, and which brand and models people of the general public/local gunshops/chumps/etc prefer to spend money on?

I don't see any possible ban until AFTER the mid-term elections OR another "mass" shooting incident... To be exploited by the "free press."

If there is another ban, the government, IMHO, would never "collect" firearms, since that act alone would start some serious sh!t...  In the worst case scenerio, IMHO, is manditory federal register of ALL "assault weapons" and "hi-cap" magazines.

They would most likely make the Clinton 94 ban perminate and "close" any and all loop holes this time around.

As for UN troops being deployed to "collect" guns in the U.S... That will never happen... Again, that would start some serious sh!t.

I stated throughout the thread, buy a couple of spare AR receivers and plenty of 30rd magazines.

BTW, I use to live in New Jersey and when I left the State, back in 2001, the first thing I did was buy within a couple of weeks was an Bulgarian milled receiver AK and a "pre-ban" Colt AR-15A2 Government Carbine.

Ammo maybe, as for receivers, I would argue just the opposite.  Prices for stripped uppers and lowers have never been lower and the manufacturers of ARs have only proliferated.
