THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
At a LGS they have a Tikka t3 in .223 with a SS varmint barrel, picatiny (sp?) rail, plastic Tikka Stock with Adjustable cheek rest.

I have been a few times too look if over and am very tempted but I have a few questions.

(Background - I would be using this rifle as a general purpose rifle that would see varmint hunting, paper punching, target shooting, etc..)

The exterior of the barrel looks a little tarnished on the finish (can't tell if it's rust or just how the matte finish is when it gets dirty), muzzle and crown look good (no dings or burnt powder marks) and the rest of it looks good as far as I can tell without a bore scope. The bolt face looks like it's seen a few rounds but nothing extreme (about like my AR15 bolt face looks like after 20 rounds although it could have been cleaned very well over the life of the rifle).

Now question #1
They want $650.00 for the rifle and won't budge although they have had it for over a year on there used rifle rack, Is this a fair price? Should I be worried about rust in a SS barrel although I live in the desert (I know metal rusts everywhere but it seems a lot slower here than other states where I have been)?

Question # 2 -

If I didn't go with the Varmint I was considering picking up a .223 lite and suppress it

Would i see much difference between the weight difference of the barrels (Varmint vs Lite @ 16" length)?
How fast would accuracy begin to go as the pencil barrel begins to heat up compared to the varmint (3-6 shots vs 15 - 20)?
Is there a ton of difference in the barrel droop with a suppressor on a "lite" barrel vs "Varmint"?

Thanks

Russ

I wouldn't worry about "rust", even stainless can rust. It'll clean up, as long as it's not pitted. The Tikka barrels are hammer forged and it will last a lifetime.
The price seems fair, as new SS models around here are $899 and up.
As for question #2, I wouldn't recommend a "lite" model for a suppressor. That's a lot of weight on the end of a thin barrel, most likely causing a huge POI shift.
I have a T3 223 Varmint, that I had cut and threaded at 16 inches. It makes a great carry rifle.
My only complaint is the long throat. The accuracy suffered, until I upgraded to CDI bottom metal. This allowed me to use AI mags and extended the OAL of the rds,and increase the accuracy.

Here's my "son's T3(he claims it's his)

Perfect!

Just what I wanted to hear!

That's good looking rifle do you have any other pictures and specs?

I am assuming the CDI bottom metal doesn't work with the Tikka original stock so you upgraded. Which stock did you get?

The stock is an A2 made by MPI.It was the only option I had 4 years ago. It came as a 70% inlet fiberglass blank.
I would recommend a drop in Manners or McMillan already set up for the CDI bottom metal.

old pics before I installed the CDI floor plate
