that you would mount night vision on? My dad is asking for ideas. He already has an M1A, but has concluded it will be too heavy.

Will an AR10 or other .308 AR be any better?

Scar Heavy. With a TA11J, sling, rail covers, larue vertical grip. No magazine, 9lbs 14oz.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. If there is one thing FN did right with the SCAR, it is that they kept the weight down.

How H&K could build a stamped metal and plastic gun that heavy, I have no clue...

My guess would be SCAR-H or an AR-10 with a carbon fiber FF tube.

It is the bolt that makes up a lot of that weight.

I second the Noveske Leonidas, or even one of the 16'' models. If you have the scratch go with the Scar17.

What kind of Night Vision?
There's been some recoil related issues with pinnacle tubes.

Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be my first choice either, mostly due to the current price and the mag availability issue. It is rather light, however.

That said my most recent .308 purchase was an RFB. Though a bit heavy at 8.6 pounds, I have no complaints- but then again I don't have to lug it around all day. My main deer/elk rifle (Marlin XS7) is only 6.85 pounds with scope, and that's the only 308 I actually carry any sort of distance.

Not sure if you could find enough rail space, but the Browning BAR Shortrac is a great shooter and is very light weight.

A .308 BAR Shortrac stalker is 6lbs 10ozs

The FN AR model is the same gun but with a 20 round mag.

Well I wasn't thinking high tech.

I was thinking lightweight.....Rem 700 Titanium mountain rifle. 22" .308 win weighing in at 5.5 lbs. Recoil might knock the shit out the tube though.

Well, he decided on a Lightweight BCM 16" midlegnth AR in .223. Hopefully it will work well for him.

An entire page of replies asking for a given type of .308, and only one suggestion (the very last one) that doesn't automatically assume that the answer needs to be a semi-auto.

Probably my Saiga .308. My AR10,FAL, and M1A is heavier then it. Perhaps the SCAR-H is the lightest .308 rifle if you can afford it.

I have an AR-10 and an S-308 that are probably lighter than the Scar by a significant amount. I need a good scale to verify this though.

No, it wont. A good gen 3 tube can take a lot of abuse. We build them to take the recoil of a 50 cal and bigger. A lightweight .308 won't bother it a bit.

Probably an AR10 with a ABS carbon barrel. Bring cash, lots of it.

uh yes it will, the housing its put in will have the biggest effect.

The 308 has enough recoil to damage gen 3 tubes, you need to get (insert housing unit here) desigend/built to get around this. You would be foolish to stick a PVS14 on a 308 without researching it.

the lightest possible build would be on the 308 AR series of rifles, you can mix/match to get what you deisre

Another vote for the SCAR 17S.
I sold my M1A to help pay for it, and am planning on selling my FAL now that it's been obsoleted by the SCAR. Just as soon as those previously mentioned mags start flowing next month (we'll see).
I like both the M1A and the FAL's, but it was exactly the same reason, they get heavy onced scoped, that made me pony up and lay down twice the money for the SCAR. Haven't regretted it once. Thinking about buying another now that prices are dropping.
