I recently acquired a stainless steel revolver with some dark corrosion/rust on the top strap.  Looks like the former owner carried it and did not wipe perspiration off...

Suggestions for getting this polished, etc?  It is just a couple spots that are 3mm size or so.  Also want to clean up the cylinder face.

First I would try just some Flitz or Simichrome polish.
Next step up if needed would be oil and some bronze (not steel) wool.

You can get the surface rust off and discoloring.  If it's pitted the pits will still be there even after the more visible stuff is gone.

Only had some corrosion on one stainless gun.  Aftermarket grip safety on a Colt 1911 Series 80.

Some 3n1 oil, a small piece of 0000 steel wool and some light rubbing got it looking nice again.

Never did corrode again.  That was 10 years ago, at least.
