OP, this is what you can do with A little elbow grease and some wood oil. These are my stock zastava hand guards. Started with 200 grit and finished with 600. If you want to stain it darker just buy some wood stain.

You can modify it, but the blonde really isn't that bad. Especially with some spiffing up.
Personally I'm a fan of red woods or bakelite. But if you dislike the blonde that much, I would highly recommend just selling it and purchasing a replacement set. |

Stain works, but check out Fieblings leather dye.
Garand guys use it a lot to mimic the dark red of oxidized linoleic acid walnut stocks. |

Lot's of people sand their AK Furniture and use a mixture of RIT Dye to get the right color. Go to the AKfiles.com and I bet there are ton's of threads about it.
