Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I have an old Stevens 820 shotgun with a plastic stock and I'd like to find a wood stock to replace it with. I'd prefer something unfinished or used. How universal are stocks? Can something like this be used?

Stocks are not universal. I would get a stock intended for your particular SG. Here is one source. You could probably get another stock to fit, but it will require skills, tools and time.

Your idea of finding a used stock and refinishing is a good option too.
