First off, i known nothing of retros, and my intended build is not a retro, but i was directed here as you guys are the experts for reworking lower markings.
i have a HK 416/22 that i am in the process of coverting to a 416C. i want to fill in the lower and remark as a 416C with my laser guy. but looking for the best method to fill in whats there first. silver soldering was suggested. whats yalls thoughts?

Compare the melting point of silver solder with the melting point of aluminum, and you might have an answer.

JB Weld has been used before, but won't anodize, so you'd have to spray it.

how do you think JB weld would stand up to laser engraving?

you can use low temp aluminum welding rods with a propane torch to fill in the engravings but it's pretty messy and would require alot of prep time before refinishing.
what will you be refinishing the lower with after the engravings are filled ? something like cerakote would be good as it will cover/hide very well. |

I'm not a metallurgist but could you melt a small amount of aluminum and fill in the markings?
Just thinking out loud with NO idea what I'm talking about.

Generally, to get filler material to stick to the base metal, the base metal needs to be approaching it's critical temperature...........or very hot. That is why, when welding, you get the base metal molten before adding in the filler rod. OP, what lower do you have that you want to "remark" , and what's your reason for doing so?.........might help us to come up with a viable solution. |

It's the umarex/Walter 416/22. Wanted to remark it as a 416C as well as maybe remark the HK logo cause what's there isn't so crisp. That's just "well if I'm remarking the C might as well clean the rest up" thought.

if it were me id pick up a $35 80% lower and jig and do it from scratch the way you want it.
