Much of the results will depend on what species the stock is. Walnut generally accepts most stains. Cheaper stocks made of birch do not evenly absorb the stain.
Any idea what it is? |

General Finishes stains are far superior to Minwax

It's just an old rifle barrel. It's an old Chinese stock using Chu-wood if that helps. Thinking of going with the other stain the 2nd reply mentioned and then going with tru-oil over top of it.

Chu-wood will not take oil base stains and water base stains tend not to work unless the stock is very clean. You will need to use an alcohol base stain (die).
