Originally Posted By Creature: How much weight reduction with those cutouts? View Quote Not a lot. Few oz maybe. This rifle was the start to several different projects. It started years ago with a basic aero lower I either grabbed from a friend or took in trade (don’t remember). I experimented with removing material to lighten it. Was going to get more extreme but changed directions. I added the factory BCM complete upper. It was first pencil profile barrel I tried out. Was originally concerned about how a pencil barrel would hold up but been extremely happy with it. Since it was a mutt, I figured I’d try to rattle can it. Kryptek was popular at the time. I bought several colors of Aervoe from Brownells, stencils from somewhere online and I just went at it. It originally had a T-1 on there that I refused to paint. I picked up an old school Comp M, sent it in to Aimpoint...they completely rebuilt/replaced electronics so that it’s like brand new. I had stencils and paint left so I matched as best I could to rifle. It’s become a favorite rifle for the whole family. It’s simple, light weight and extremely reliable. My kids have enjoyed learning the platform with it. Pretty sure my daughter considers it hers at this point. Attached File This project took several days and I drove myself crazy getting it the way I liked it. Like someone else previously mentioned...the next attempt was after a few too many drinks. Hardly any prep, no stencils...just fun “what the hell”. Here are the results of that endeavor. Attached File Attached File |

Gun control is like trying to eliminate drunk driving by making it illegal for sober people to own cars

View Quote @Arsenaljoe As others stated, Aervoe green is relatively close. Painted this a few years ago and has help up decent. Think I did two ish coats and I found heating the Aervoe cans prior to painting helps a lot for a smooth spray. Hot water in a bowl works. No final coat, paint is already flat and it’s a gun. My build's a blend of that carbine and the early JSOC carbines. I call it the "Undisciplined Cowboy CAR-15." Got a TA47 on order but I might cancel it if I can find an old CompM instead. The CAR-15 in Desert Combat had a 3x or 4x ACOG up top, and most guys who clone these things just use the Aimpoint which is why I kinda wanted to do the ACOG. |
