Since my wife stole the Viper for her build it "forced" me to upgrade my mini-recce and the SE went on my beater, so I painted it to match today.

I've searched but couldn't find a good definitive answer.

Anyone know what spray paint, alumahyde, etc color matches the Glock 19X?

Then build a $400 rifle that you can paint.  It gives you a reason to have another AR.

Do better at what?

As long as it's not black, even just plain straight OD green works wonders.

Do better at actually camoflauging and blending in with their environments. It obviously depends on what that background is, but I've seen "messy patterns" disappear more completely and more often than some of the straight and neat designs.

There are enough slots, shadows and angles on the average AR already...so much so that adding paint splotches and patterns are not really nessessary.

The idea of camoflage is to dimish the very discernable shapes of larger objects. In reality, the goal of painting a AR is simply to reduce the visual cues that a high-contrast standard all-black rifle presents.

The human eye has been tuned by evolution to be very good at discerning black. In my opinion, camoflage on such a small object like an AR reaches a point of diminishing returns VERY quickly.  A single-color (earth-tone) AR rifle blends in surprisingly well in a wide range of terrains and outdoor environments.

Poppycock.  This monochromatic rifle...from just 5 or 6 feet. I still need to get around to spraying the optic, taclight and the rest of my mags.

No one is saying that monochromatic does poorly. We're just saying that the messier patterns tend to do better than the "clean" designs. OG black > monochromatic/clean multi-colored matching your area > messy/blotchy matching your area.

Right.  Camo is worthless.  It does nothing.

I don't feel like going back through this thread and snagging the pics where the rifles virtually disappear in multiple environments.

You're right, the shapes and shadows that naturally exist on an AR help it even if you don't have a camo pattern.  But to try to argue that a camo pattern doesn't help even more seems a bit foolish to me.  And to do it by putting your brown rifle against brown objects, well, you made me smile, that's for sure.

My rifle isn't brown. Its OD Green. Which is the magic of OD green. It blends so well with everything. Even brown fences.

My point is that some camoflage patterns are so bad that they virtually have the effect of repainting the rifle black. This key when sparay painting a rifle, monochromatic or patterned, is to use any earth tone that is on the lighter side in terms of shading.

Could no longer suffer my purple Colt SOCOM uppers; at the price point of a SOCOM you'd think the days of purple were behind you, but apparently not.

A few hours of prep work, some DuraCoat #4 Matte Black, and their royal purpleness is no more.  I'll let them cure for several weeks before putting things back together.  Still a bit of Matte Black left in the can, I think I'll hit my 4 liner lock carry blades tomorrow and use it up...
