I have long spoken out again faux weathering, and for the most part, am still against it, however, I decided to give it a go on my SF-TRAINER-556:

The SF-TRAINER-556 is a training adapter for the Surefire FA556-212 and SOCOM-RC family of suppressors... it's a fake can.  And while most of the time fake cans receive a lot of deserved derision for those who are "only going for the look," they do have some practical uses, e.g., when firing frangible ammunition during short range training/shoot-houses and/or using Simunitions (the hole in the Training Adapter is big enough to accept both 5.56MM Simunitions and 9MM Simunitions) where you want/need to simulate the weight and length of a suppressor but don't want to risk damaging your actual suppressor.  This can be important for military and LE... but for a personally owned suppressor that can cost near $1,000 and a six month wait, IMHO, it's definitely worth a little extra IF you make a habit of firing frangible ammunition and/or Simunitions, but want to have the "feel" of the suppressor in cramped quarters.

Of course, I gave into "the look" a little bit, too.

On the one hand my Surefire suppressor is still pending on a Form 4, and probably won't clear until close to the end of the year (check cashed in late-April).

On the other hand, I know that the training adapter is not likely to get the same kind of use/abuse/heat from firing frangibles and Simunitions, which is fine, but the SF-TRAINER-556 from the factory comes in an anodized black finish with nice white color fill on the markings.  Also, since this rifle also doubles as a demo gun, I wanted the training suppressor to more or less "match" the rest of the rifle, instead of sticking out as an add-on part.

Paint was free-handed Rustoleum Camouflage (Khaki, Earth Brown, and Deep Forest Green, IIRC).  Simulated "wear" was based on actual suppressors I already own that have gotten pretty beat up over the years.

This is the "Training Adapter," and comes from the factory anodized black, and is for firing frangible ammunition and Simunitions through without damaging an actual suppressor.  To facilitate that, it has a fairly large diameter hole through it (a complete 9MM round will drop straight through), and is otherwise a solid aluminum (I think) tube with mounting hardware, long story short, it's just a fancy fake can.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/surefire-training-suppressor-for-simunition-frangible-ammo.html

The bright yellow blank firing adapter has a closed end with ports on the side to bleed off extra gas, while maintaining enough pressure to cycle the weapon with M200 blanks.

You did a great job. Doesn't look like spray paint, especially from a distance.

Did a recent build that as many projects, started life as spare parts and grew into another rifle.  This one will be a dedicated varmint rifle, so no BUIS.

Not exactly a rifle, just a test piece to see if I liked it. I used the stencils available on eBay.  I think I'll go ahead with it.

I can't believe I'm about to paint a $4.5k rifle with a $3.99 can of spray paint...

Whelp here goes the first coat.

What do you guys think I should do pattern wise? I'm leaning towards pine straw because it's effective around here, but I'm up to suggestions.

The base coat is rustoleum deep green, I have army green, earth brown, and khaki. Anything else I should be looking at?

ETA: here she is in all of her painted glory.

I have seen that on other firearms as well.
I don't know if I'm missing something or if they don't know how it is originally suppose to be mounted.

I'm pretty excited how this came out. I usually run just solid FDE guns or black guns. I kind of liked the contrast of the dark brown against the tan but like how it all mixed together in the end. I left a bit of extra tape on during the last photo of the scope. All in all, pumped about this!

The paint on mine is getting worn down in places. There's probably less than 1k rounds through it but it gets taken everywhere. I drag it all over my farm, strap it to my four wheeler, and put it behind the truck seat.
