I've been thinking about doing the same. Got a can of Aervoe foliage green that's been tempting me.

Rustoleum camouflage.  Khaki, light green and dark green.  Ended up looking like this

Not really sure what I was going for other than just trying some stuff.  I need to tighten down the mesh netting next time.  Overall I like it.  Blends in well in bright light and light shadow.  I got the khaki sprayed then realized I don't live in a desert any more so I kinda winged it.  To blend in with my AO I need something that blends better with green trees, concrete and empty 40 oz bottles better.

Added some more brown to mine.  Think it matched my Michigan environment better.

Aervo light coyote and coyote as the base coat. Then hit it with some Rustoleum Camouflage Khaki from Home Depot for the accents.

ETA: I hit it with the base coats and let it cure for 4 days then hit it with the Rustoleum

Acetone will take forever and be in a PITA. Get this stuff (do not get it on your skin) and let it sit for about 10 minutes. It will come right off, and just rinse it under the sink with hot water and a nylon brush

PS, that looks like absolute asshole. That guy owes you a case of beer.

I agree.  I like the way a painted gun wears and shows through the base black.

Are you guys putting any clear on the top of the paint?  or should I just run it without and touch up as needed.

No clear, no touch-up. It only looks right when it's all smudged and worn away.

I'm running without clear coat.  As the pain wears I think it actually looks better.  You start to get some black showing through on the high spots much like you'd expect to see.  If it gets to the point of messing up the camo you can just touch up a bit.

While perfectly painted guns look great in pictures, they don't have to be perfect to be effective.

Upgraded the stock.  Matched pretty well I think.

No clear coat, FWIW.

Base coat of Krylon Khaki, mist over with Earth Brown in random spots, then OD/Forest green sprayed thru a big handful of long grass. I honestly have always preferred tan paint jobs but this one matches my environment much better!

nice looking paint work, guys.  I've done a few scopes and red dot optics but haven't had the dice to spray a whole rifle yet.

other than degreasing the upper and lower and masking it off, is there any other prep work you guys do to the metal parts?  in my trial-and-error sessions with stuff I have laying around, metal seems to come out better when degreased and hit with the krylon, no primer.  the primer has given some what of a texture to the parts I have experimented with.  the krylon I have used is an all-in-one primer and paint but I am a believer in redundancy, hence the trials with the primer some times.

thanks for any input into method, material, etc.

X

Overthinking things, party of one, your table is ready.

Just spray it and go.

No primer, no degreaser, just spray. And go.

If you really want to degrease it grab a can of brake klean and spray it down.

This is what I do, Plastic and all. Make sure you 1. shake your cans for 1min it really does help and 2. Don't mix brands

Not an AR, but a fun project on the Win 94 44 Mag. Krylon FDE, OD Green and Brown. Used a mesh laundry bag also.

Trying to work up the gumption to paint one of my rifles. Tried my hand at mags first. Colors used were Rust-Oleum Camo Sand and Army Green, and Krylon Brown Boots/Satin. Left mag was originally foliage green and right was black. Has a kind of European Camo feel to it. Not sure I want to do a rifle this way though.
