THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I have an upper and lower receiver that I would like to refinish. The problem is that I do not want to lose the durability of the anodizing that is already in place. I like Cerakote alot, but they recommend blasting away the anodizing finish. Are there any "good" products out there that work well going right over the anodizing? Thanks for the help! |

i was told by duracoat a while back that certain types of anodize (type 2?) can be just de-greased and then sprayed over. givem a shout.

Yeah, it's a standard type 2 anodizing. Like I said, I really do not want to remove the original anodizing by blasting. I would like to degrease and go right over the anodizing. Does anyone know if this can be done with Cerakote?
Thanks! |

I'm a big fan of Norrell's Moly Resin. It's a spray and bake that's way better than GunKote. I lightly hit my P13 frame to give it some "tooth" for the moly resin to adhere to. The anodizing stayed intact, it only got dull without blasting off the black anodizing. Cleaned, degreased then painted.

I haven't seen on their instructions where it says specifically to blast away all of the anodizing to the bare metal. I think a light blasted profile helps the material to adhere, but there's no reason to remove all of it. |

I've used Cerakote and KG Gun Kote over anodizing with no problems. However, I do media blast with 120 aluminum oxide whenever possible. You don't have to take the anodizing all off but blasting gives it uniform texture and helps the coating adhere. You really don't need anodizing under Cerakote anyway.

So... would it be safe to say that one could just rough up the receiver with some sand paper and then coat? I just like the added protection of the anodizing. |

my take is if you want the most out of whatever finish you decide i would blast the anodize off. you need tooth for the finish to grab. ive sprayed duracoat on different things through the years that havent been blasted. as long as you degrease and scuff with a pad and apply properly it will wear at least as good as any spray paint if not better.if you wanna keep the anodize just degrease and spray. if it doesnt wear well just re-do it. one thing i have learned is that there is no magic finish. some wear better than others. some are very easily touched up. the duracoat matte black is one of my standard colors for a reason.

The problem with sandpaper is that it can leave lines which can show through the finish. I'd just spray over the anodizing without sanding if you choose not to blast it. It's aluminum for one thing not a high carbon steel that will rust. Cerakote with probably protect it more then anodizing. And if you ever plan on taking the Cerakote off, the only way to do so is by blasting. |

I've always had good luck with Cerama-coat. I've used it over all types of finishes and it actually does better when the surface isn't bead blasted. I know Midway sells as does Sportsmansguide

Forgot to mention it comes in all colors as long as you like black. LOL. That is one drawback about it. It does need to be baked but then again so does cerakote

I did mine in fde cerakote over a year ago. You don't have to blast it off. I talked to NCI and it can be put on over the anodizing. There are two versions which are the oven and ambient air cure versions. Just clean and degrease real well. I also did my barrel which was parkerized. That did not need to be blasted too. It wears better than paint.
Hope this helps. |
