THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT so i started with the birch stock on top as received from numerich for 33 bucks shipped.
i stripped it and redyed it with a mix of cocoa brown rit dye mixed with denatured alcohol.
i then applied quite a few coats of tru-oil and it looked pretty good, but i just could not convince myself that i liked it that much to not think about starting over.
all together:
so, i stripped it and redyed it with the same mixture, but with a little black added:
and a preview with the 1st coat of pure tung oil applied:

I have done many beautiful woodstoocks, some simply sprayed clear gloss, mostly satin and some with multiple applications of poly like a bar top. They look great but I prefer the less flashy, non reflective and warm look of Tung Oil.
My favorite stocks are the ones that wear nothing other than Tung Oil. I may put a bit of time into the preparation of the wood but as you know there is little time involved to acheive that beautiful Tung oil finish. It dries hard, is tough and is ready for work. it can be thinned greatly and applied over and over to aid in it's penetration of the wood. It resists water and is ready for work. |

Tung oil certainly is effective , straight-forward , and beautiful . . . I like it on most everything .
